A most unlikely cable convert
Oh boy, I hope Steve reads this. Probably won't matter though - opinions on either side tend to be set in concrete. However, your dad's story does give one hope. OTOH, maybe he's just another convert to the legions of benighted (us) who are fooled...
Jazz and the Hammond B
Abstract7,(Curious moniker that.) Anyway, on my previous post I suggested Don Patterson. Take a look at wwww.800.com and do a search for him. They seem to have at least 6 reissues on CD of his work. I like him a lot, but he may not wind your clock...
Jazz and the Hammond B
Going from memory here, but I think there is (was?)a gent named Don Patterson who did some really good stuff. I listened to a lot of jazz in my misspent youth, and he was among the best. But you can't beat old Jimmy Smith.
Anybody else wanna pull their hair out ?
Thanks Sean,Point taken, but for something like this for me the basic question is: will the McDonald's offering do the job adequately? Given my constrained budget, I try to spend sensibly. Approx. $1500-1600 for a Bags' rack fitting my needs is a ...
Anybody else wanna pull their hair out ?
Funny, that's a problem facing me now. Just got some new toys and find the old cabinet, beautifully built, has a somewhat restricted access for connections. Wish I had a trained elf to go back there and make the hookups, but such are scarce. Have ...
Amps and Women
Detlof,I appreciate your thoughtful reply, and, yes, you interpreted my argument correctly. I simply left the conclusion unspoken. I don't agree that it vitiates my argument, but we can agree to disagree :>). Re "passivity".. who the blazes kno...
Speaker wire is it science or psychology
Redkiwi,I've just read your post and have found your argument persuasive. Since you've stated you are a scientist, it's tacitly understood you are a proponent of measurements and repeatability. That notwithstanding, you've also expressed a willing...
Amps and Women
Katharina,It's an interesting question you pose, but its premise, I believe, is flawed. You suggest that women, inferior to men in physical strength, martial ability, what have you, needed to hear imminent danger as early as possible. Fine as far ...
Comments on Bryston SP-1 Pre/Pro
Hi Mike,Are you working with a local dealer? If you are not, you may want to send me a private e-mail (I think you can get if from this site) and I can give you some real interesting info that may save you time and money. Actually my wait has been...
Comments on Bryston SP-1 Pre/Pro
Mike,Have a look at Audio Review (I know, I know). But occasionally someone with a brain makes a sensible post there. Check out Robert's review - most laudatory in its tone (Shane's also). Awaiting delivery on mine and will post my impressions her...
best mahler no. 5
I second the recommendations for both the Solti and Haitink. I've often thought old Bernard didn't get the critical acclaim I feel he deserves less because of the Concertgebouw and his work and more because he wasn't idiosyncratic enough, i.e., to...
The Back Street Boys of Classical??
Cwlondon-The other respondents are right. Your teacher may be a superb technician and theorist, but he(?) is a card-carrying snob. Stravinsky a "salon composer"? Good grief! Though he doesn't always fire my muse, Stravinsky was a composer of consi...
Cough vigilante
Dougholdco,Every time I read a post such as yours I'm reminded of why so much of my money has gone into elaborate stereo equipment and sources. Am full up with the coughers, whisperers, candy unwrappers, cell phoners et al. BTW, it's no better her...
It is frustrating.....
I think Ikarus is onto something, but it seems there's a point here no has touched upon: this rude behavior is symptomatic of a general debasing of our culture, from the mosh pit devotees to the concertgoers. You could debate for hours they whys a...
Speaker wire is it science or psychology
SeanGood note! Agree that there are differences, though they maybe hard to quantify. I'm of the "diminishing returns" school about wires, just as everything else in audio. Are there differences? Yes. Am I willing to pay some preposterous prices to...
