Can a small speaker sound really really good?
boostb, do you ever get up to the Portland OR area?
The dumbest stereo experience ever!
About 40-some years ago, I was a service tech at a TV/Stereo repair shop, and they took a contract as factory service for several very cheap brands of console stereos.  I went out on a service call at an older lady's house (she was probably younge...
McIntosh C22 Unsolved Problem - for techs/smart guys/EEs
Sounds like a flaky tape monitor switch.  Next time it goes out, switch the monitor in and out a few times, see if that wakes it.I've also seen an intermittent tube socket do this, but on that unit, the pins were visibly discolored and didn't grip...
Are there headphones that image in front of you rather than in your head?
I think a big problem is also that the image with headphones is unrelated to head movement. When listening we are always moving our head slightly, gauging distances and directions, but the phones move with us and mess it up. Maybe some DSP and pos...
Best Small Floorstanding Speaker under $2K
Do think about that available space vehind the speakers.  If you dont have room or S.O. cooperation to let you pull them 3+ feet out from the wall behind then, then forget about Maggies, Lxminis, LFTs or other dipoles.  Or ominis either for that m...
5% THD to .000 THD SOUND
Interestingly, though, their Overture integrated amp, which is a push-pull EL34 design, has its max power spec based on 1% THD. Just guessing, but perhaps their thinking is that differences in how THD is distributed among the various harmonics wh...
5% THD to .000 THD SOUND
Something to keep in mind is that "harmonic distortion" is a way of measuring a distortion from an amplifier, you don’t play music, for instance "at 5% distortion". The amplifier is driven by a single frequency at a time to some rms voltage (or po...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
I think that one big bit of progress (that hasn't seemed to come much to the attention of the audiophile world yet) is the Danley-type Synergy horns.  Yes, horns were around in the 30s, and coaxial speakers too, but a single wideband fullrange hor...
difussor's
Diffusers on the front wall would still be for "live front".  Diffusers don't deaden sound, they just make it more diffuse (break up the reflection to cause less interference with the direct arriving wave at the listener).  Front-firing speakers ...
difussor's
While checking back here, I noticed an error in my post above -- my DIY diffusor is a 1D diffusor,  Which is probably the kind you want, 2D diffusors tend to diffuse too much energy toward to floor and ceiling, so that much of it dissipates before...
difussor's
Diffusors (at least 1D diffusors) will not deaden the sound in the room, but can clear up and stabilize imaging while leaving liveliness in. If you have dipoles, then diffusors behind the speakers is probably a good idea. Otherwise, they usually w...
What makes an expensive speaker expensive
One thing to keep in mind is that the selling price is very rarely decided by the engineering or design department. The marketing department is in charge of deciding the list price and the allowed dealer markup. Much has to do with perceived value...
sound wave speed and other ways they behave/react.
If you are going to investigate diffusers, take a look at AFMG Reflex software.  You can get a free month's use to demo (it expires after if you don't buy a licesnse, which would be expensive...but you can do a lot in a month).  Very informative t...
Need feedback on loudspeakers
I think you may be confusing sensitivity and efficiency? For an amp like yours, I’d only look at sensitivity (usually spec’d at 2.83V). Provided the amp can drive the impedance (yours can), an 88dB sensitivity 4 ohms speaker will play just as loud...
Question on Hafler DH 220 price
Hi,I can't comment on whether the price is right or not, but I'd advise checking the Hafler for physical transformer noise before buying if you go that way.  Put it on a wooden table or board or the like and turn it on (without anything else attac...
