Bryston 3bst vs Bryston 3b
After accidently shorting out my wonderful pair of Audire 125 wpc Audires, I am using a 3b and a 4b.  They actually sound pretty good, but they pale in comparison to what I am used to.  I guess that when you compare a 200 wpc amp with 2 375 watt t...
Electrostatic pros and cons.
Full range electrostatics are totally phase aligned, but not full range, because the upper frequencies are rolled off.  Of course, if you have a good jazz or classical FM station nearby, they work great, because FM signals are chopped from 15000 c...
I’m gob smacked. What were you’re aha moments?
Directional fuses and high tech power cord.  Ha ha. Just kidding.
Power conditioner and high end power cord
A dedicated 30 amp circuit (10 guage wiring) costs less than expensive cords and works better than running these wires from a 15 or 20 amp circuit.  With this 30 amp circuit, power conditioners are moot.
Do you ever do this before you listen?
Yes!
Favorite band or artist of all time?
I am appalled by this blog's nearly total lack of jazz, blues, and classical artists listed, not to mention music from this century.  Jeezus, I'm 72 ,but I'm not too old to appreciate current greatness.  Do most of you just listen to Alternative R...
How good's your hearing
Listen to a great FM tuner and you will see.  Cut off at 15000, by design for other doodads doing stuff up there.  Not only are harmonics lost, but so is directionality from frequencies we do not even hear, but that our brains sense and interpret.
Some components too old now?
My B&W DM 14's are 38. My 803 Series II are 22.  My Acoustats are 33.  My Audire amps are (Forte) 38 and 22; and 35? (Parlando).  My two turntables are 40 (DD) and 35 (Bele) with 3040 year old arms from Grace, Formul 4, and Signet.  My tu...
Have you had enough of Classic Rock?
I tried satellite radio for a few years.  The playlists are not very "Deep" as you guys say.  For one example, I know no one who likes Kansas, unless they have albums.  Just how many times can you only hear Dust in the Wind and Left Overture witho...
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open.
Youe are really great for doing this.  I have read that James Parker (Is that the right name) of Audio Research seems to design in a bit of added second harmonics to his designs. When I consider that some bands, most notably The Grateful Dead with...
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
Also, If you can afford a $5000 cartridge, buy cheap airfare to a town with a dealer who will demonstrate what you seek. Schedule your visit with a concert, etc.
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
Here is one thing I have learned, surprisingly from Yamaha dealer training:  Never buy anything from a dealer who badmouths his competitors products. It means he is too lazy to learn what is good about his own, or like many sales people, has dealt...
NAD classic power amps good, great or mediocre
I had an NAD 2200PE for a few years, along with an Audire Model 2.  In comparing the two, both are exceptionally clean, but the NAD did not separate the instruments in space, at all.  The Audire did. When I found an Audire Forte, I got rid of the N...
price of Oppo players threw the roof
Are you saying that if you bought one, you THREW your money away, like maybe over the roof?  Just be glad you did not buy the $500 one that was rebadged,, repackaged,  and sold for $2500.  Supply and demand also affected the $100 the Sony digital ...
We Need A Separate Forum for Fuses
I am fascinated by the directionality arguments concerning fuses.  Did proponents of this idea forget that our electronics are powered by alternating current? That means it goes back and forth, not just forward. Besides, the transformer has no dir...
