Do true audiophiles own Mcintosh gear
People can criticize McIntosh gear all they want but it is durable, well-made, aesthetically pleasing, sounds good, and holds its value. Not saying it is perfect, but I also don't understand where all the criticism comes from.
Tube Amp for Martin Logan Speakers
I ran Martin Logan Aerius-i with an Audio Research VT60 on the 4 Ohm taps and it sounded great (wish I would have never sold that amp) and I listen fairly loud. At the time I also had a Bryston 3B and believe it or not, the ARC gave the percerptio...
New Thiel Speakers - Post Jim Thiel Era
I love my old 1.2's and thought of upgrading to 1.7's but now I problably won't. I hope the company survives, but Jim Thiel was the visionary for the unique speakers they produced. With him gone, that vision is also gone, and they may be left with...
Tried a Bryston 4B with Maggies
Zd542 - I sold the D300 when I sold the Maggies. Naturally I now regret it.
Tried a Bryston 4B with Maggies
I used a 3B with my 1.6's and it sounded great. I agree with the statements that have been made regarding synergy of the Bryston Amps with the Magnepans. It was one of the best Solid State Amps I heard with those speakers (I like the Audio Researc...
For 35 years, I'm an Audiophile wanna be
In my opinion you are better off having the ARC gear repaired and it will be good for another 35 years. My Father still has the SP3A, Dual 75 and Dual 51 he bought in the early 70's and it still all works and sounds great.
Any experience with Arc ref75 driving magnepans
I read the Stereophile review of the Ref75 and they mentioned the appearance with the meters was similar to the D79. If the Ref75 will not drive magnepans, however, that must be the only similarity between the 2 amps. I say that because I have a D...
Why do some audiophiles beat up McIntosh?
Donjr - I also like McIntosh gear. Though the years of being on the merry-go-round of equipment by various manufacturers, I regret the Mc gear I sold. In my experience it is well-made, robust both mechanically and electrically, nice to look at, so...
Khorn room size
I enjoy the sound of my KHorns in a similar size room. However I built false corners for them using 3/4" plywood so I could change the angle of the speakers. Part of the problem in such a small room is the speakers are not far enough apart and the...
Rega RS5s - side ports in or out?
I have the smaller RS3's and I read somewhere (forget where) to place the woofers in or out based on how far they are from the nearest object or boundary. If the speakers are close to a side wall, then place them in. If the speakers are closer tog...
I heard Emotive bought Bob Carvers tube company
Probably will turn into more junk made in China.
Reissue of Threshold S350e?
Out of curiosity I looked at the e-bay auction for these Chinese-made Thresholds. The photos showed wire nuts on some of the internal wiring!!! Good luck with the "quality" aspect of that. I will stick with old Made in USA as opposed to new junk.
Rogue M180 or Antique Sound Lab Hurricane DT?
Although I have never owned anything from ASL I have a hard time believing they are made with such quality (made in China). Especially after reading the Soundstage review where they couldn't even review the amps without taking them to the repair s...
Upgrade path: Rega RS1 vs. Vintage Floorstanders
I had the R1's and I also liked them very much, but I felt they lacked some bass. I traded them to my local dealer and got a pair of RS3's which I like very much. They seem to maintain the resolution and detail of the R1 (or RS1) and have the adde...
The Audio Research Reference 10 is here $30k
This is a more general comment about ARC. I was always a big fan of theirs with alot of respect for their equipment. My father owned their gear since the company started in the early 70's. A few examples of what I have onwed through the years (not...
