Best tube for Cal Sigma 2
yugo ei12ax7 - very neutral and transparent - i use it in both the sigma and alpha.
I'm still working to love digital, are you?
when i play records i occasionally get one that sounds really great - no ticks, pops, silent backgroung, no wow/flutter etc and i'm estatic. but what a pain in the ass to get there! i really only listen to vinyl for special performances when the c...
Sibelius Symphonies
otto, you like strauss and sibelius, have your tried bantock? this is a composer from the british isles who should be heard, not your typical bucolic english music. he was a contempoary of both strauss and sibelius. his music was influenced by lis...
What is your favorite Strauss The Last Four Songs?
otto, while i like von karajan's lp i'm not too fond of the recording by dg. i find myself listening to jarvi on chandos as it contains a good version of tod und verklarung and drei hymnen as well as metamorphosen (it also has lott). and, ormandy ...
What is your favorite Strauss The Last Four Songs?
as a supplement to schwarzkopf w/szell, i find myself going to felicity lott. i love her voice - its a little lightweight compared to others but in this music i find that i actually prefer that.
Sibelius Symphonies
for otto: out of curiosity i picked up sanderlings' #2 and 3. both are very good performances, i liked 3 a bit more than two but he keeps the pace up. i'm not fond of performances in which the conductor tries to make sibelius into a "romantic". ve...
Concord Jazz
just came back from b&n w/14 cd's. these were made in europe for that market. many are not in the us catalog any longer. i'm going back tomorrow! for the price you cant go wrong. they have a lot of the maybeck hall series which were excellent ...
Concord Jazz
concord jazz is one of my favorite contemporary labels. try scott hamilton, gene harris, ray brown, ken peplowski and dave mckenna, depending on your choice of instruments and music - they're all good recordings, but for starters i would stick to ...
mixing tubes and transistors
the only electric hazzard you are creating is the possible transmission thumps/pops while the preamp is settling down. some of these could damage amps (unlikely but possible) or the speakers (quite possible). if your preamp has a mute switch that ...
6550 tube question
i just retubed my sonic frontier sfm 160's with svet 6650's. they produced a very balanced neutral sound. for reference, in these amps the svet kt88' sound some what brighter and the sovtek kt88's some what rolled off and closed in. in a different...
Tuner in the 600 range for classical music?
if you don't need sensitivity but you like musicality find a used perreaux tu3. with a strong signal this can sound as good as other source analog. its not dry or clinical which is how i find so many tuners.
6H23 tube Ya or Na ?
i'm not using a modulus, but i am running 6h23eb's in my sp10. tonally there is no difference from my older sovteks. the 6h23's are a bit smoother and in my system just a tad noisier - they will not solve brightness problems if you have them. can'...
Sibelius Symphonies
otto, blomsstedt with the sf. i note you like russians - if your not familar with the ashknazy versions you might give them a try, i like #4 best. you can just feel the cold wind of the artic...........
Swan Lake ballet.
i'd vote for gergiev on phillips or fedotov on jvc. both all russian productions.
Sibelius Symphonies
vanska on bis - all 7, my favorites. also ashkenazy, blomstedt on all 7 and levine on 2 & 5.
