The invention of measurements and perception
jea48, aren't microphones and tape recorders essentially measurement devices/test equipment?  If it wasn't for these measurement devices would you even know what the timbre of a performance were?
Thinking about upgrading, but wondering about diminishing returns
Upgrade your sources first.  Start with the cartridge and and the CD player.  Nothing is wrong with them, although the Apheta has its detractors, I just believe their replacement would provide you the most cost effective path.
Speaker plinth material bottom ported Zu Omen Defs
From what you wrote, you do not have a problem, but you imagination has run wild.  If your basement is bone dry, then stop worrying. On a technical note, your plinth, unless it's enormous, will effectively be invisible to the frequencies coming out...
All Kit are Band-Aids
Wasn't all this revealed by playing DSOTM at 16 2/3 rpm?
What unknown musical artist would you like to share with your fellow audiophiles?
I'm a big Marti/Don fan too!Although they are not unknown, Ojos de Brujo deserve much wider attention in this country.  Great musicians, song writers and amazing performers.  Here's a link to a video of a concert from 2007.
The awakening...
Being an audiophile is a state of mind.  If you flip the switch and turn it off, then you can then enjoy music on lesser quality systems.  At that point you can join 99.99% of the human population who can also enjoy music reproduced on lesser qual...
Am I missing something here?
Not everyone wants to put the band in the room. And yes, at some point in the future the prized systems of 2018 will sound dated and their faults, which are not the same faults as earlier systems, will be easily heard. That does not mean that some...
Am I missing something here?
You're situation is not unusual.  Your system is not a high definition nor contemporary sounding, but it is highly effective at delivering good sounding music.  You're in a very good place, so don't worry about the high end stuff. If I were you, I'...
Tidal loudness normalization
If properly implemented normalization will not diminish dynamics.  Normalization raises the loudest point in a recording to a predetermined level.  The peak loud to soft differential remains the same.  Google "Tidal loudness normalization".  There...
Could I be a Retail Wretch?
As someone stated above, it's an issue of class.  Either you have it or you don't.  Giving a dealer the opportunity to match a price is a touch of class.  Going into a dealer with the sole intention of using his facility and knowledge in order to ...
Is it time to just quit?
n80, it worked out wonderfully for Ishmael!  Against the mightiest force in nature he survives and lives to tell the tale.  Remember his alternative was a pistol and ball.everybody dies but the fish and 'ishA whale is not a fish, but it has ring t...
Is it time to just quit?
Gibberish, alternatively jibberish, jibber-jabber, or gobbledygook, is language that is (or appears to be) nonsense. It may include speech sounds that are not actual words, or language games and specialized jargon that seems nonsensical to outside...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
Use a true analog recording for your comparison.  "Surfacing" was recorded digitally.  Your Esoteric could still win, but at least it will be a fair contest.
Greatest debut album
Not the greatest, but Aztec Camera's "High Land, Hard Rain" is a very impressive debut album. Roddy Frame was still a teenager at the time.
The Cartridge and Stylus makes a big difference.
sibilant, mistracking and inner groove distortionSounds like setup issues.
