Ribbons. Electrostatics. Planar speakers. Confusio
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletcher-Munson_curves) Here's a site that explains the effect I was referring to. Just FYI! If your passive pre were the problem(or it's impedance presented to the source), it would sound the same- regardless of the ...
Ribbons. Electrostatics. Planar speakers. Confusio
There's something called the, "Fletcher-Munson Effect" that defines how one's hearing response varies with acoustic(DB)level. As in: Less sensitive to lows and highs at lower volume levels. That's why some equipment(usually mid-fi) will be found w...
Do I need power conditioning for my new plasma?
It all depends on how critical your eyes are. Just like listening to music: A lot of people can't hear the differences that a good power conditioner makes(definition, bass tautness, soundstaging, less grain/more extention and transparency), and th...
A good 50-70 watts tube amplifier for $ 2000?
I forgot to mention Cary(I'm using modded SLM-100s, and VERY pleased). Kevin Deal also handles Cary and AES at Upscale Audio, BTW.
A good 50-70 watts tube amplifier for $ 2000?
(http://www.upscaleaudio.com/view_category.asp?cat=36) Check out the PrimaLuna Monoblocs(and their reviews) on this site. Kevin is a super guy to deal with too.
Musical Heaven, NOT Audio or Speaker heaven …
One of the beauties of a wide dynamic range, high efficiency speaker system. Of course Dynaudio has been making excellent cone systems for a long time. Ever try an SET amp with them?

I've been a sound engineer for the past 30 years(a tech for years before that. I'm currently the sound tech for two local bands and my church. This gives me the opportunity to listen to live music(acoustic and amplified) at least twice a week(gene...

OH- If you are looking for an inexpensive, and high powered/decent sounding/VERY stable SS amp: Find a Hafler DH-500. 255 Watts into 8ohms, can drive a 2ohm load easily(you can practically arc weld with one). Do a search on them. I'm using a Hafle...

I owned an audio retail/repair shop in Florida for years(early 80's). Most in the industry referred to them as, "Flame Linears". Back then(70's/80's) solid state was in it's early days still and people of the "louder is better" set really went for...
Can tube preamps be as 'detailed' sounding as ss?
Were you to invest in a Cary SLP 98, then search for a NOS pair of TungSol 6SN7GTs(black, round plate from the 40's), and a pair of NOS Sylvania 6SN7Ws(tall bottle, either metal or bakelite base): you would find yourself listening to your entire d...
Kimber Kap installation
Sorry: a correction- In a power supply: the red wire connects to the voltage(whether + OR -) and the black to ground. Further: In a speaker system crossover application- connect the red toward the "+" terminal on the drive unit.
Kimber Kap installation
In a signal path application: the black lead is, "input", the red, "output." In a power supply: the red should be "+", the black, "ground." AuriCap, WonderCaps, etc are all coded alike.
