Tube Biasing in Amplifiers
Okay, the lower bias level doesn't seem to be a problem as long as I run it within an acceptable range. How the other way, does it make any sense to overbias the tubes? I have other tubes which support a much higher level of biasing. What about the...
Ebay Tube Blues
Thanks for the info. This gives me a good understanding of the issues here and will let talk intelligently with the people I bought these from.
Ebay Tube Blues
I have biased the original EL34 tubes of the exact same type in the same locations and the originals bias just fine. The original tubes can handle 400mA, no matter what socket they sit in. That's why I suspect these new ones have problems. If this...
Ebay Tube Blues
I can attest to the sometimes fragile world of tubes. The EL34 pair were a replacement and backup for a recently bought used set (yep, from Ebay too) where I burnt out a single bulb. In that case, I wasn't careful about the bias levels and I can a...
Brush/scrubbing ideas for VPI 16.5 record cleaner.
Thanks the all the ideas. I finding that cleaning albums is something that takes a touch. While I'm truely impressed with the 16.5, it also has its limitations. I think just using VPI cleaner and vacuuming is good for new and lightly soiled record...
Manners, Eticks & Audiogon --- What do you think???
I always use the email as a test and inquiry about the seller. No response or incomplete answers? Walk away. Remember, the transaction includes both the item and the seller. You need to be happy with both, or you're setting yourself up for trouble...
How to improve the sound of VTL2.5?
I just finished talking to VTL about possible improvements for my Vtl 2.5 and they (actually she) had a couple of ideas. Since one of my tubes are really noisy, it was suggested to replace all 4 tubes ( 2 12au7s, and 2 6350s). Is it smart to chang...
Vintage turntable running fast, any ideas?
The turntable is not perfect but it is much better. From several internet searches I found that the original belt was possibly too thick and a tad long. I had great hopes for a new thinner belt and it did slow down the turntable, but not nearly en...
Vintage turntable running fast, any ideas?
It's wierd, I thought a percent or two change in speed wouldn't make much of a difference, but it does. With the speed-up you get an increase in frequency and also a change in timing. Not only are voices pitched higher, but the music has lots of e...
Vintage turntable running fast, any ideas?
I have a theory on why musicians have such crappy stereo systems. From watching my violin playing brother-in-law, he uses a stereo like someone would use a hammer. All he wants from a stereo is the pace and tone of the music; mainly so he can play...
Vintage turntable running fast, any ideas?
It's funny how these threads have a life of their own and don't go in the direction you expect. My initial thought that it was some electrical problem within the turntable, but, most of the talk has been with mechanical issues.Of all the suggestio...
Vintage turntable running fast, any ideas?
There is an arm that moves the belt between two different diameters on the pulley. My theory was if it was getting in the way, it would slow down the turntable. Right now, it doesn't look like it affects the belt much.If I want to physically chang...
Vintage turntable running fast, any ideas?
The turntable is belt driven where the pulley is connected to the shaft of the motor. I have cleaned the area where the belt rides on the pulley. I don't think the pulley is worn because this would cause the table to turn slower or possibly errati...
What would you do?
EBay has a money back guarantee for fraudulent or mis-advertised products. They cover "almost" anything up to $200 but charge a $25 fee. This might work instead of going the COD way. I doubt its easy to get your money from eBay, but it is there. C...
Turntable help Please
Hey Pops, before you sign off records, realize that they are the cheapest way of trying out "kind of recent" music. Plus, there are all kinds of sources for records ranging from eBay to thrift shops. Without wanting to start a big fight, I would a...
