DVD / CD Transport worth having?
The 9000es is the best combination player available.
analog gurus, please help, cartridge too light?
I agree with Sean, this seems wierd, but first make sure the turntable is correctly leveled. Just increasing the tracking force to compensate is not the proper way to address the probem, since the static balance of the tonearm will not be correct....
Best Amp for under 10K?
Berning ZH270($4500) or Siegfried($7500) OTLs.
Why no threads on OTL amps?
Regarding Berning, my dream amp is the Seigfried: a 300b ZH type OTL w/12wpc and dual volume pots to allow direct input. It's killer. And like the ZH270, it will drive low impedances with authority. Talk about perfection, a 300b, pure class A sing...
bypass outlet and hook wires directly to romex??
John, I see your point. I have considered the possibility of using a separate amp and subwoofer combo with an active crossover. I realize that if it is crossed out low enough, there will be little or no problems created in the lower mids. I have a...
Are You Happy?
Otto, I hoped someone would pick up on the Bordeaux comparison. I haven't tasted the '61 Latour. The '82 Petrus is monumental. Also recently had '82 Margaux(pure silk) and '82 Cheval Blanc(massive in cabernet franc). I recently lost out on winebid...
Are You Happy?
Ben, if you ever do hit the lottery, and get that dream system you spoke about, then you'll know what we're talking about. Many people may think that 1975 Chateau Latour is great, but when your have become accustomed to '82 Petrus, the Latour sudd...
Am I assuming too Much?
In response to the "noise" aspect of vinyl, I have found that "clicks and pops" are reduced when you have a properly designed phono stage input section that does not overload on the wideband splash that the "pop" creates. This is a major step in v...
Are You Happy?
I'm one of the ones with 90% "unlistenable" CDs. But let me qualify the statement. My system is not at fault beyond the fact that it reveals what was probably not meant to be revealed on typical low fi stuff it was recorded for. Imaging, soundstag...
0dB gain question
No, the passive unit is strictly dependant on the output level of your source unit(CD player, etc) If you have a high enough output from the line level source, passive is fine at any volume level that doesn't exceed your amplifier's input sensitivi...
How much bearing oil?
As a person trained in Linn turntable setup, I agree with Lugnut's advice. However, when inserting the spindle/platter assembly into the bearing, be careful to not ding the top edge of the bearing with the spindle, center it carefully. Let the pla...
0dB gain question
Marakanetz, gain is the opposite of attenuation. To have gain, implies amplification, and this type of system is in "active" preamps only. Passive preamps are really only input/output switchers with a global attenuator which can only attenuate(red...
Can any one tell me if a progressive scan dvd play
Dbx, I just noticed in your post that you had 5.1 HT. The Sony DVP S9000es is stereo only. Oh well.
Can any one tell me if a progressive scan dvd play
I agree with Stehno on the Sony 9000. I also have one and it is fantastic. For a one-source system that will do CD,SACD, and DVD it really can't be beat. I use it as my main source and love it. Paid $675 used, here on the goN.
bypass outlet and hook wires directly to romex??
Sure Stehno, I'll tell you what I can about my trials and tribulations regarding that topic. I have built quite a few different speakers in my day, and the designs varied based on my knowledge at the time I made them. Good low bass isn't hard to g...
