Buying speakers ten or more years old a good idea?
You can pick up used Thiel 5i's, 3.6's and 7.2's for ridiculously low prices now and those speakers can outperform any number of new speakers. I'm sure others know of similar makes and models. There are some real classics out there that are well w...
Hi-rez downloads, any good?
Mlsstl,I'm really glad you pointed this out. Analog to digital converters may be set to take off soon because of precisely what you say. HDtracks would be better off doing this with many recordings. I hope they consider getting the rights to do it...
The Conrad Johnson Premier 350: Revisited
Bill,I've never heard the Rowlands but they are definitely among the most beautiful solid state designs, IMHO. ;-) I know Robert Harley loves them.
The Conrad Johnson Premier 350: Revisited
Thanks, guys. I'm feeling very fortunate right now.@ZD542I apologize for the imprecise use of the word "vintage." I only meant it in the sense that one refers to a car as "vintage" when it is still valuable but no longer manufactured. The fact tha...
Hi-rez downloads, any good?
Speaking of compression, check out this great video on the recent treatment of Nine Inch Nails' Hesitation Marks.http://2020k.wordpress.com/2013/09/04/ian-shepherd-analyzes-cd-audiophile-masters-of-hesitation-marks-by-nine-inch-nails/
Hi-rez downloads, any good?
I believe HDtracks contributes to a type of "misdirection" that is prevalent in the world of high resolution audio. When Mr. Chesky advertises downloads that are merely upsampled standard resolution recordings as high resolution, it's a real shame...
Tube vs. SS Dilemma
Musicgeorge11,Congrats! It's always great when the puzzle pieces finally come together.
Best Powercord for a TV?
Soundsvision,I have a Shunyata Hydra that I use for my home theater and it is even better than the plug into the wall. Color saturation increases and images appear to have added dimension. If I used high current amplifiers I would plug those direc...
AES cable for Berkeley Alpha Dac
Shunyata's AES Python Zitron digital cable is the best I've ever heard. Lengthy break in is required, though.
DAC Recommendation around 2.5K
+1 on the used PWD II DAC. I think it's the most analog sounding DAC you can get anywhere near this price range. Anthony Cordesman of TAS as well as a host of others reviewers agree.
Shunyata conditioner
Leog2010,I recommend you call Shunyata Research and ask for Grant Samuelson. I can't tell you how many times Grant has advised me to go with the "cheaper" option because it was best for my system and needs. He will give you honest advice that is n...
Influential Producers
Team212,I agree except for the Plant/Krauss project, which I happened to like...but it's not a position I can logically defend. ;-) I think T-Bone is a genius, but he's a very "big" presence in the studio from what I read. I think his work with Sa...
Influential Producers
Dodgealum,I second every single producer you mentioned. Just mentioning them is sending me on a search for more of their work. ;-)
Influential Producers
Dodgealum,Great topic! I agree about all of those mentioned thus far. I also pay attention to producers when I'm perusing recordings. It's not an infallible indicator of quality but it gives me an idea whether the recording will be something I lik...
Best Powercord for a TV?
@Nonoise,"I believe my lying eyes." Exactly! LOL
