NHT Sub Two Owners
I have a SubOne, FWIW, and it is quiet as the tomb. It does bump on turn on, but I leave in on in standby, so it doesn't even do that. I have it in the front left corner, beyond my left main, and it is truly seamless (crossed over at about 10hz be...
How to upgrade my Rega Planet based system
A caveat on the sub, though. A good sub will improve bass a lot, and arguably also improve soundstaging if well set up, but that's it. With power conditioning, the whole picture/spectrum is improved. As a matter of priority, I would do the sub aft...
Are NHT VT2.4's harsh, or is it just me?
I have a more modest home theater with NHT SuperOnes, SubOne and a Rotel receiver, and I'm very happy with it, although I have a separate 2 channel system (5 channel vs. 2 channel is another thread). Since you like the immediacy and dynamics of th...
Tired wiating - good Bryston/what else to get?
Similar to, but better than Bryston, and still Canadian after all these years: Sim Audio. Classe also fits your description. A used Moon I-5 is cheap, lovely, and killer good. If you don't need the line stage, look for a used Celeste 4150, which a...
How to upgrade my Rega Planet based system
My suggestion is to work on power, power conditioning and/or power cords. The Mira is small enough that you can run it through a conditioner without current limiting becoming a problem. In my experience, dedicated lines is the highest return on in...
Out on the tiles...with speaker spikes.
No kidding, pennies sound better than quarters. This experience was actually the first time I knew I was a freak. I could hear the difference between quarters and pennies, and it was similar in general terms to the difference between silver and co...
Krell or Classe Integrated for Sonus Faber Concert
I love the concertos, and I also love YBA. I don't own either, so that's based on store auditions only. I would also add the Sim I-5, though, if you want a punchier, bigger sound. The YBA is silky smooth and wetter; the Sim faster and more tart. A...
Linn's Ninka speaker: Anyone heard it??
I admit to being a bit of a Linnie (Linnie's Anonymous, anyone?), but I also have never thought much of their speakers. The best one I've heard is the 5140, which is open and dynamic and punchier than the typical Linn speaker. I would add that the...
Dynaudio Contour 1.3SE brightness?
Try the Totem Model 1. Head to head with Sim Eclipse and I5, I preferred the Totem. It is a bit richer and fuller, but with all the transparency and immediacy of the 1.3
Electrical outlet upgrade worth it?
I heard a small improvement when going from standard residential to Hubbell 20A hospital grade. I heard no improvement swapping the Hubbel for various Leviton and Bryant industrial and commercial outlets. I heard a meaningful improvement with the ...
Linn- Ekos or PS Audio 300
I would also go with the Lingo. If you determine to add the PSA 300 later, great. My experience with the Lingo is that plugging it into a power conditioner makes very little difference. I have not tried the PSA, but I have tried other PLC's and PC...
How come no one talks of sansui?
Ah, nostalgia. My 7070db took me through college, with a Micro Seiki/Ortofon table and Wharfdale E70 speakers. I thought it was the best. I'm still happy, but the price of admission to the fun house has gone up quite a bit.
Woofer pumping - what gives?
subsoninc feedback is definitely your problem. Isolation is the key, and also try moving your rack out from the wall, where low frequency waves stack up.
Sub for Aerial 10Ts
The best sub I ever heard is Linn's Seismik. I throw it our there for consideration, but I would add to the chorus that the Aerial sub is quite something. I drive my 10T's with a Sim amp (no sub), and I can hardly imagine the visceral grunt of 10T...
Totem mani 2 or Dynaudio 1.3 SE
I've heard both these speakers in stores, and I think they are both good, but quite different. The Dynaudio's are more "accurate," leaner and drier, whereas the Totems are warm, earthy, lusty things. I thought the Mani 2 was great for its drive, b...
