Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD

Hi All.

Putting together a reference level system.
My Source is predominantly standard 16/44 played from a MacMini using iTunes and Amarra. Some of my music is purchased from iTunes and the rest is ripped from standard CD's.
For my tastes in music, my high def catalogues are still limited; so Redbook 16/44 will be my primary source for quite some time.

I'm not spending DCS or MSB money. But $15-20k retail is not out of the question.

Upsampling vs non-upsampling?
USB input vs SPDIF?

All opinions welcome.

And I know I need to hear them, but getting these ultra $$$ DAC's into your house for an audition ain't easy.

Looking for musical, emotional, engaging, accurate , with great dimension. Not looking for analytical and sterile.

Round 1 is ended. I respect your decision...it is YOUR decision after all. But you have also provided lots of color and commentary and genuinely have been complimentary to all DACs, assessing their strengths in your system and to suit your taste. Nicely written. Look forward to more Rounds!
Fantastic reading...thanks for taking all the time. Congrats on clearly having world class stuff to choose from, and no doubt you'll be satisfied you have truly done your homework. Look forward to the final conclusion to an exciting read...
I wish to repeat this is a great thread...really enjoying it. Thanks for putting in all the time and effort, and equally appreciate all the insightful comments from others as well.
Mattnshilp,

I think when Alex speak of "Analog Devices chip", this is the name of the chip manufacturer. Kondo for example uses a chip made by Analog Devices in their DAC 5 Signature and DAC 5th Element...the 1865 chip I think?

Zanden uses the TDA 1514 double crown DAC chip, etc...

More recently, Gryphon Audio Stahl-Tek have used ESS Sabre 9018 chip, etc...

Alex - hope I got that right!
Hi Lampizator,

Great to see you here. I see you mention a 'family member' of Zanden's TDA 1541 double-crown. What is your thinking on that chip and those that use it? Just curious.
