Audio Research LS7 and LS8 question

Can anyone tell me how the volume controls operate on either of these units? Are they "detended" with "stops" along the way, or simply free moving with no detents?

For what it's worth, and according to Home Theatre Review, the LS8 has a detent free volume control.

I have spent some time with an LS7, but really can't remember if the volume control was detented or not.
