Best streaming wirelessly from Mac to stereo syste

Tried buying an Apple Airport Express ( I think that was the name) to stream music to a system in another room. Hooked it up. Nada. On the forum I was told
that my Verizon router was incompatible with the Mac and I would have to buy
an additional piece of gear from Apple to make it work. I gave up and returned
my purchase. Time has passed and I think there are new products out there to
supposedly do the job. Any input on the subject is very welcome.
