Eminent Technology ET-2 Tonearm Owners

Where are you? What mods have you done ?

I have been using these ET2's for over 9 years now.
I am still figuring them out and learning from them. They can be modified in so many ways. Bruce Thigpen laid down the GENIUS behind this tonearm over 20 years ago. Some of you have owned them for over 20 years !

Tell us your secrets.

New owners – what questions do you have ?

We may even be able to coax Bruce to post here. :^)

There are so many modifications that can be done.

Dressing of the wire with this arm is critical to get optimum sonics along with proper counterweight setup.

Let me start it off.

Please tell us what you have found to be the best wire for the ET-2 tonearm ? One that is pliable/doesn’t crink or curl. Whats the best way of dressing it so it doesn’t impact the arm. Through the spindle - Over the manifold - Below manifold ? What have you come up with ?

Thanks so much guys. @Frogman, yes please on pics, email is vinylryp@gmail.com. I am in Denver, but would gladly pay 2-way shipping for the chance to test drive a loom! I get to NYC 2 or 3 times a year for a customer, but it is sporadic at best.

Bruce sent me some special 3M adhesive strip rather than velcro for the trough. My paddle just barely makes contact with the surface as it should, like I mentioned, my trough has a twist, it is as straight as it can be, but is not true. I tried to true it prior to install, but... it's okay -- like you said, you don't fill it up. I think it is doing its job fine, and the leeching has stopped, maybe I jostled it at some point.

@Ct0517, would you email more specifics on how to order a loom from Gene, more detail on the build or components? Looks like he is in Canada? I'm a former bench tech (30 years ago!), so pretty comfortable with an iron, but am not above paying for expertise either.
Frogman,

I would love to see a pic of your wiring setup? I recently acquired an ET-2 on a Sota Sapphire. My wire is a bit worse for wear and appears to have bathed in the damping trough at some point too... I am looking for an upgrade and am intrigued by your description and experiences.

Thanks!
Ct0517,

I have to say that I am enamored with your wiring loom!

I was close to ordering this litz wire:

but after reading this thread, it appears you folks have done the field testing, so am learning more from your solutions and opinions, and the photos are very helpful too!

Right now I have just done my own amateur re-wiring direct to the preamp, but would like something nicer like you and Frogman have in the wiring department.

Also, curious your thoughts on the magnetic damping? Effective? How did you arrive at the right number and spacing?

I reinstalled the damping trough the previous owner had removed, and got adhesive and fluid from Bruce, but there is a slight twist in the trough, but I was able to get the level I needed without spilling out the side. But, the fluid seems to leech back and drip, so am a bit disappointed with that.

Thanks for all the great info here, even though I'm late to the party.
I have re-wired avoiding my internal ET2 harness as well. I have been advised by a rewiring guy that you can realize up to 3db gain by ridding of those connections within the tonearm, not sure it is that extreme, but was noticeable for sure!

I picked up a second wand from Bruce so I can more easily swap cartridges, and I made both a Cardas and Litz loom, seen in these pics, had to arrange gear as mentioned above to keep them short!

Speed has indeed been an issue, but am making progress on that front too!  ;)

No worries vpi,

Those are from Lowe's Hardware, in the audiophile aisle...
;)

They are screw protector caps, made to put on the end of screws to keep from catching or cutting yourself, you can find all colors, try Ace, Home Depot, Lowes... usually in the speciality hardware section.

Regarding troughs, mine had the little end cap fall out and subsequently disappeared, so I have no "end" for mine currently, need to craft a fix for that.
Hi Chris, yes, had not enabled the "watch" on this thread, so was oblivious until recently it had restarted.

I indeed have 2 aluminum wands and yes, running LOMC's - Ortofon Quintet Black (boron cantilever), Ortofon Quintet Mono, and an AT33PTG/II.

I have had different wraps on them in the past, and stuffed foam inside too (what is your stance on that?), but they are naked now.
I have ordered my own sheet of CF wrap though, so am going to give that a try.

I do still have the original single leaf, but seeing your post I did write (again) to Bruce yesterday, so might change that up too.

And I am shamed into knowing I need to clean the manifold too! Although I do have dual inline filters and dry Colorado air in my favor.

Oh, and out of order, but Bruce recommended this pump to me a few months back, so am running this now, is performing well, very quiet.
Hi Harry,

Looking at the new springs currently...

I made same assumption on the Alita and Bruce clarified from the product website:

Look at the pressure versus flow graph, at lower flow rates the pressure goes up, the Alita AL-15 usually measures about 3.5 - 4.0 when operating a tonearm.

it is turning out to be more than strong enough.

👍

I made the same change after seeing the nice "loom" made by Take-5 that one of you posted years ago, ordered the Cardas wire, clips and plugs and did my own, my tips on the RCA were not as nice looking, but still functional.

Later, bought a second wand from Bruce and made my own new loom with Litz wire I acquired from Trans-fi (the Terminator guy, Vic), he has a smoking deal on kits with clips and reasonably priced wire.

Now I can swap cartridges and/or wire much easier, currently very happy with the Litz / Ortrofon Quintet Black combo.
