Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Something old:
Ray Charles & Milt Jackson - Soul Brothers.

Something new:
Brad Mehldau - Blues and Ballads.

Hi o,

You guys have knowledge of jazz far beyond mine, but I have always loved jazz and have begun to appreciate it more than ever.

I recently bought a Hegel DAC and joined Tidal to expand my exposure to jazz by using this thread as a guide for learning more about great jazz using the extensive Tidal jazz database.

I will continue to share what I consider to be extraordinary finds as I go. Hopefully some of these will be beneficial to you experts and to others looking to increase their enjoyment of this great music.

Thanks to you all for building such a great database of knowledge on this topic.

Best to you all,
Dave

No worries o. Demonstrating extreme passion toward music is a breath of fresh air compared to what is occurring elsewhere in our world.

Dave

Sounds like very rough going, o. So sorry. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Dave
^^Hard for him to say listening in a truck. ;)

I bought the 50th anniversary and own the last gen digital master and also original US pressing and I like the soundstage of the 50th the best (centered vocals vs extreme L/R panning). Ringo's drums (especially snare) are clearer and more dynamic as well.  No downsides to the 50th compared to the others to my ears. Worth buying to me.

Dave
shubert,

It is indeed ironic that you would acutely sense popular indifference toward another's opinions (be it true or not) but are completely oblivious to the same toward your own.

Dave
Diana Krall "Stepping Out". Before you laugh, I find this album to be a big step up from her other stuff in every way and the sound quality of the remaster is phenominal. Check it out.

Dave
Hi o,

Humorous is fine. Glad you found it worthy of consideration for purchase.

I failed to thank ghosthouse for his kind words re: Bruce Katz "Transformation" and his accompanying excellent recommendations some time ago, so thank you ghosthouse!

Dave
o,

Not sure what Frim Fram sauce actually is (although there is a recipe for it on the web) but it is the title of a nonsensical song who's lyrics were written in 1945 by Redd Evans with music written by Joe Ricardel and made famous by Nat King Cole, although performed by various artists over the years since. Yes, this is plagiarized from Wikipedia ;)

I also enjoy "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo". I saw Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, and the other Flecktones in a small nightclub in Charlotte many years ago. It was one to remember.

Brian Bromberg's "Wood" is an excellent listen also. I recall that it was once recommended by REL to set their subwoofers' crossover and gain adjustments if I am not mistaken.

Dave
Hi frogman,

I hear you re: Diana, but this was her first album and, as often is the case, her best IMO. More style and personality to the vocals and great accompaniment. More than just drab covers...

I do a lot of streaming from Tidal these days and it would seem to be perfect for you guys here to quickly (and relatively inexpensively) screen through a vast collection of jazz recommendations and perhaps even stumble on a few great ones that you have not yet experienced. Easy peezy. I do just that (often with the titles recommended on this thread) and then buy pre-screened select hi-rez downloads of the best titles from HDtracks when available.

I’m afraid that the size of my CD collection will remain as it is. Still love my player though, so the CD/SACDs I have get heard too.

FWIW.

Dave
frogman,

Perhaps I hastily judged the title in question. I did listen to the rest of it and found some tracks to be very good (the tracks without the sonic pyrotechnics). Sound quality is excellent overall.

However, I notice that many "modern" jazz titles of late are using electronic grunge far too prevalently (for me), some of which are nearly devoid of what I know as music. Bill Frisell is about as far in that direction as I can bear.

After completing listening to the Hudson album, I retreated to "Soul Brothers" and once again marveled at its understated beauty, soul and mind-soothing magic, and sound quality. That seems to be where I live.

Admittedly, my sophistication, knowledge, and transcendence in the "Hudson-type" segment of jazz pales in comparison to some on this thread. ;)

Dave

I completely agree with ghosthouse on that one, o. The loud distortion artifacts intentionally added to the first track is a complete non-starter for me. What were they thinking?

Dave

The sound effects are distortion to me, o. Just not for me, that one or any of similar ilk with such sound effects. I have heard quite a few of those recently and completely fail to understand the appeal.

Jazz on.

Dave
C'mon in o. A prime listening spot in my acoustically-treated utopia awaits you. Skinny cigarettes are optional.

Dave
Macy Gray - Stripped.

Amber Rubarth - Full Moon in Paris.

Alexis Cole - Ain't we got fun.

+1 on that frogman. "Tenderly" is by far my favorite Benson LP and one of my favorites period.

Dave
Tried to find pryso's album/track of Abercrombie - Timeless on Tidal. Nope, not there. Becoming increasing frustrated with Tidal pushing sonic and social crap instead of music.

o, saw one of those mosquito trucks spewing, errr, "something" the other night around my neighborhood. Didn't detect the odor of the substance you elude to. Bummer.  ;)

Dave
My sincere appreciation to you both, ghosthouse and o, for the links. I will simply have to unplug the USB cable from my Aurender to my DAC and plug in my laptop.

ghosthouse, I just have to ask: does your moniker have an interesting story behind it?

Dave

ghosthouse, once an extremely earnest and seriously-minded employee, while visibly trembling, looked me straight in the eye and told me his story of eerily detailed ghost-related occurrences in an old house he rented during college. Been intrigued by such ever since, thus my inquiry.

Thanks for recommending Spotify. I will try to get it rolling.

o - sorry for my lack of decorum here. I post musical suggestions when I feel they are worthy of the esteemed company on this thread.

Dave

Thanks for clarifying, o. I do not feel intimidated by you or anyone here, just feel that I own the duty of diligence in qualifying submissions plus I respect what I do not know.

I will return to auditioning your and others’ submissions here as of tomorrow. Trying times with custody of my grandson and big turds in my punchbowl associated with/created by my elderly father have kept me from investing quality time with good music as of late, but both challenges are being sorted in God’s time.

Oh yeah, and then there is the mammoth hurricane headed toward me as I write..

Best to you, o, and to ghosthouse.

Dave

Thanks o. I very much appreciate your empathy.

Okay, I will go WAY out on a limb and nominate track 1, "Laveau Dirge No.1" and track 7 "Familiar" from the Trombone Shorty "Parking Lot Symphony" album.

The latter track is particularly challenging for the true jazz aficionado I expect.

Credit to Erik Squires for alerting me to this gem.

Dave
o - Believe it or not that particular Chris Potter album is not on Tidal! Boooooo!. I gotta find time to learn about Spotify as ghosthouse said.

I am working my way through several other Potter albums in between "you are going to die" weather broadcasts. lol.

Listening to the Grover Washington Winelight album right now. Available on Tidal MQA. Yes!

Will respond with impressions.

Dave
Methany is ok but not my sweet spot. Grover good but a little Kenny G-ish to me.

Cigarettes After Sex. A late night favorite of mine. Not exactly jazz(?), not audiophile, just turn down the lights and melt into the music...

Dave
Wow. Those are winners!

First one not on Tidal. Growing increasingly frustrated with JayZ's direction re: Tidal.

Dave
That one would be a great candidate for a hi-rez download instead of 44th version of Jazz at the Pawnshop. lol

Dave
Guilty as charged, o. :)  Very well stated although I never thought of it that way.

Can't wait to read of your picks...

Dave
Thank you acman and o. Water level in front of our house stayed stable today so no flooding. I consider that a blessing considering.

Heavy rain is predicted to end in my area around midnight. If so, out of the woods for this one.

Great pick o, maybe too easy? Who can argue with that one? ;)

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.

Dave
As usual, your condescension overcomes all shubert. You stand apart from the decent human beings offering support and empathy in the mist of a devastating natural disaster as I suspect is your intention.

Dave
I've been hung up lately on Billy Strayhorn & Johnny Hodges "Juice a
Plenty". Great tunes and musicianship (IMO) and the sound quality is phenomenal.

Dave
Ready to stretch a little? The Milcho Leviev Quartet (Milcho Leviev/Art Pepper/Tony Dumas/Carl Burnett) "Blues for the Fisherman". Live at Ronnie Scott’s Club - London June 1980. Mole Jazz/Linn Selekt Records - Stereo Mole 1.

Not blues at all but great jazz...

Thanks frogman. Back to Back is a gem. I may have it on vinyl in a 1200 LP jazz collection I bought years back. Will have to look...sounds good on Tidal though.
