Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

1959 was a banner year for Jazz;
Miles Davis -Kind of Blue
Dave Brubeck -Time Out
Charles Mingus -Ah Um.

if only Coltrane could have released 'Giant Steps' (1960)
during 1959...
I am stoked as we enter into 2015 and await the Jazz offerings for this new year. The last few years have been especially excellent for Jazz music. Happy Listening All!
2015 has been another banner year for Jazz.

Spring will be here soon. What are your fave Jazz albums/cds to kick off
the new season?  Happy Listening!
As above-
Jazz is an intellectual, specialized genre from the very beginning.
Classical falls into this nomenclature as well. Both styles lack the following of Popular (pop) music for better or worse.
Calvinj-

the (4) cornerstones of Jazz are from the year 1959;

Miles Davis- Kind of Blue-
Charles Mingus- Ah Um
Ornette Coleman- The shape of Jazz to come
Dave Brubeck- Time Out

Honorable mention- John Coltrane "Giant Steps".
these discs will get you started in the right Jazz direction.
Big fan of McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane. They were quite a force together.  Love the Sahara disc.  Happy Listening!
As much as I love Jazz music, big band/swing does nothing for me.'
I am much more into Bop, Hard-Bop and modal Jazz styles.
Another Bill Evans unreleased concert from 1976 is slated for a March drop date. "On a Monday Evening" Concord label.  The last (2) have been nothing less than Outstanding!

Renee Rosnes has a new CD dropping in February 2016.

Any other new Jazz releases slated for next month?

Blue Moon + Saturday Morning are (2) recent masterpieces by the master himself.
