J. Tillman - Singing Ax

Recorded by: Steve Albini
Mastered by: Bob Weston

^ inneresting company keeping - Tillman - is here in...

An audiophile listen, treat and experience.

I don't know what Albini's done but he's taken Tillman's minimalistic male vocals and guitar - supporting provocative confessions - to new heights going beyond the wonderful "Year in the Kingdom" LP.
Weezer's "Hurley". Vinyl flat and black, sound at times bright. Music very good to GREAT. Possibly their BEST to date. Absolutly worth the price of admission.
Just listened to Down And Dirty by Widespread Panic (gotta love the name.) Great 2 album pressing. Quiet as death too.
Hole's "Nobody's Daughter". I bought this record about 2 to 3 months ago. It has been just sitting there. I kept looking at it and wondering why I bought it? Well I finally open it up to give it a spin. To me this album is proof you find the best stuff when you least expect it. The lead singer, Courtney Love, is a cross between Joan Jet and Janis Joplin. She is a hard rocking singer with a hard edge. The sound quality of this pressing is pretty good. The vinyl is flat and thin. The cover, not much to it, not a lot spent on this pressing. But, if you like hard rocking female sinders, this album is for you. It is well worth the spin. This record proves Love was more then just Curt's girlfriend. Much more.
I'd have to say that my new ORG 2-LP mastering/pressing of Diana Krall's "All For You" album is my favorite. It takes my breath away. I have several really good LPs, but this one seems to just be a notch above my 200g Classic Records, 180g Speakers Corner, and D2D pressings.

The Holly Cole pressings of Temptation and "Don't Smoke in Bed" run a close second. "Smoke" is a near bargain; mastered by Bernie Grundman, 180g pressing in Singapore, $25 and flawless.
Aloha - Home Acres - .
Robyn Hitchcock - Storefront Hitchcock
B-52's - Mesopotamia
Guster's "Easy Wonderful". flat white vinyl, very good sound and GREAT music! Elton John/Leon Russell/"THE UNION". Fantastic record set. Really nice black, flat great sounding vinyl. great music. both have to buys *****
Morrissey's reissued "bona drag". I was never a smith's fan or even morrissey for that matter. This album changed everything. It is fantastic, I love it. I am now a fan and I understand all his fans world wide. On top of it this a great package and vinyl. A MOST buy!***** Run out and buy it, you will thank me.
THIN LIZZY live and dangerous 1/2 spd remaster
on 180 grm virgin vinyl.

DAMN!! it just sounds so much more "open" and
it feels like your at the gig. the blanket that
covered the past recodings of this KILLER album
is finally OFF and the sonic detail thta i never
thought could come from this (or any other) live
album is there and makes it a much more engaging
listen. a MUST BUY for all lizzy or classic rock
fans!!!

now we just need someone to give Lynyrd Skynyrd's
EPIC live album ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD the same
treatment. i could die a happy man then!!

MUSIC is in the ear of the beholder.
Eddie Vedder's Into the Wild out on Cameron Crowe's label Vinyl Films Records. Nice LP package.
the thermals's "Personal Life". Excellent album. I liked it so much I ordered all their older albums as well. It is amazing what great music you can miss if you are not listening. The vinyl is very nice and flat. Compressed at times. Maybe intentional, for that AM sound. But, reasonably good sound. Simple cover. I very much enjoyed this album and strongly suggest you give it a spin.
Well, here is my favorite vinyl, in "rotation"

Ry Cooder: "Bop Till You Drop"

Jimi Hendrix: "Band of Gypsys" 180g remaster 35th anniv.

Derek Trucks Band: "Already Free" MAN! This LP is damn good!

Jeff Beck: "Emotion & Commotion" A stunning LP from a true guitar wizard

Cat Stephens: "Tea for the Tillerman" 180g remaster

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers: "Chicago Line"

Rodrigo y Gabriela: "Rodrigo y Gabriela" 180g audiophile pressing: Flamenco guitar duo, must hear their revision of "Stairway to Heaven"

Bill Evans Trio: "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" 180g remaster: Scary-good sonics, like this trio is playing in your room.

ENJOY THE MUSIC!!
RA RA RIOT's "THE ORCHARD". Great pop/rock songs. Excelent sound. Flat well pressed vinyl. Simple sleeve. Well worth the spin. **** 1/2 stars. Near perfect album. A group to watch!
Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond: Jazz at the Blackhawk.

A red vinyl album I picked up at a garage sale. It's slightly trashed, but I just love it.
Bruce Springsteen "The Promise". After listening the first time, I was very disapointed and put away on my record rack. Last night I started revisiting springsteen. Born to Run, Greetings from Asbury Park, etc. Then I listen to Darkness at the Edge of Town. I forgot how great an album it was. So I gave the Promise another spin. Side B would be the weekest side in my oppinion. Having said that, BETTER THEN 90% OF EVERYTHING ELSE OUT THERE! You think about it, this is what did not make it on to the album. Unbelivable. Much better then I first thought. First rate package. Well worth the money and the spin. MUST HAVE for Springsteen fans. Lets face it, who is not a Springsteen fan? Even John Lennon new he was great! **** 1/2
About two months ago I preordered the Dylan mono box set and the Witmark demos. I recieved the demos a few weeks ago. Like most of the Dylan bootleg series, I was disapointed and could have gone without. Hype again! Two days ago I got the Mono box set. I was not even going to bother opening it. But it came with plastic wrap mostly ripped off. So reluctently, I unpacked and figured what the hell? If you are a Dylan fan, if you were there in 1974 when he did his come back world tour with the band, if you love Dylan and understand his true greatness, this box set will make you relize he was/is even GREATER then you thought. It is fantastic. It is a first class box set. The best that Dylan has ever sounded. When he sings "even the president of the united states has to some time stand up naked", I am there. At that concert. Except, the sound here is soooo much better. It is astonishing. We are hearing a recordings, from close to 50yrs ago, that has never sounded so goog(GREAT, FANTASTIC,extraordinary, etc). A most have. No down side. A bargin. I am hooked all over again. And it is fantastic. *****
Notec -thanks for the post on Vedder's "Into the Wild". Pop culture often zips by me...I didn't even know about the movie. Great film, but even better soundtrack, and excellent album package. I'd always hoped Eddie would do something like this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Wretches and Jabberers soundtrack is very well done. Not sure the genre would appeal to everyone here but it's a gem IMO. Apparently only 500 made though so unless they make more supply will be short.
The new Fleet Foxes album Helplessness Blues - great tunes, absorbing guitar work, and excellent sound (although they could have backed off on the reverb a bit).
Good question....from Koegz above.

Have you heard Hugh Masekela album, "Hope"?
Its a Jazz album. Listen to the track: "Coal Train".
I have a small LP collection of just over 1100 records (mostly Jazz), and I go through them and label the best sounding ones. I have many great sounding records, but Hugh Masekela "Hope" is the one I remember rhe most. I bought it new from Elusivedisc.com. I first heard this LP at an audio show in Tokyo two years ago, and I never came across a used one, so I bought it new.
Kind of a gothic/folk record from the Current 93 school. Really sad but stunningly beautiful and the sound is killer.
Thurston Moore's Demolished Thoughts has great synergy with Beck as producer. Sounds like unplugged Sonic Youth with Beck in Mutations/Sea Change mode, channeling Nick Drake.
My Morning Jacket Circuital. A big step forward for MMJ. A kaleidescope that starts out echoing Savoy Brown, Tommy-era Who and darker 90's bands like Morphine and Acetone and one wild White Stripes femalisation in Horehound mode, then gradually softens toward Neil Young electric melodicism and even a few bubblegum & doo-wop inflections. There are some great brass arrangements in spots. It shouldn't cohere, but it does and creatively so. IMO the year's most interesting rock, with exceptional SQ on 2x 45 rpm.
I am thoroughly enjoying Robbie Robertson's new one - "How To Be Clairvoyant" and Tomothy B Schmitt's "Expando".
Dgarretson - re Thurston Moore's new album - how is disc one for you? My copy is a fairly poor pressing. Disc two is near perfect though. Tried to return it, but the second copy had the same issue with disc one.

Beck's influence is all over the album making it the most commercial thing from Thurston Moore I've ever heard. It does sound a bit like Sonic Youth doing their take on Sea of Change:-). I dig it regardless:-).

Gonna try and spin MMJ's new one tonight!
Vince Guaraldi Trio, "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" 180 gram 45RPM

This is excellent.
I have this one a little while now, but Jamie Cullum's new Pursuit album on 45 RPM vinyl is very good and not too expensive ($25)...I was playing it just this weekend after I put Stillpoints under my Technics SP-10/Basis Vector/Denon DL301 combo...
Mab33, Unfortunately the first disk of the Thurston Moore double LP has a hard-to-track bump on the lead-in track on both sides of the pressing. Was this your problem as well? In other respects the pressing and SQ are fine.
The new album by Warren Haynes, "Man in Motion" is terrific.

The guy can play guitar.
06-10-11: Dwette
Vince Guaraldi Trio, "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" 180 gram 45RPM

This is excellent

Yessss I totally agree, how I could forget this splendid album?
although I've never heard the 180GM 45 RPM version
Yello "Touch"
Not much in common with their earlier work which I also like. This has been a crowd favorite for the last couple of months in my room.
Lately I've been enjoying an album quite immensely, that I have had since the 80s. However, I am just getting back into vinyl this year after a long hiatus.

Matthew Locke
Incidental Music to The Tempest
The Academy of Ancient Music
L'Oiseau-Lyre (Decca) DSLO 507, 1977

I can't tell you how fantastic this is. Awesome performances and excellent sound and recording quality. Plus the angelic, pure voice of a young Emma Kirkby.

And now it's even better with the Naim NAP 250-2 I just bought. :-)
Fleet Foxes Helplessness Blues: this is a weird album reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel and My Morning Jacket, but very compelling - it really grabbed me on just the first listen. It's recorded well, too.
Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, Marble Son. The double LP comes with a CD, but without the vinyl you'll never know how wwll she does like a young Marianne Faithful backing wicked psychedelic R&R. Among the year's best.
John Hiatt, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns. He's been on a roll with his last few albums, but this one is closest in importance to the seminal period that produced Bring the Family, Stolen Moments, and Slow Turning. "When New York Had Her Heart Broke" is a perfect hymn to 9-11, straight-forward, wonderfully crafted, and unexploitative. Like every bit of this album, it's free of the bluesman affectations that occasionally weaken Hiatt albums. He's on his third wind as an artist-- one of the precious few bridges to the '70s who remains seriously relevant. Excellent New West production on three sides of a double LP.
If you are a fan of Jesse Sykes (I just got my copy of Marble Son) you may wish to consider Nicole Atkin's newest LP " Mondo Amore." I like side B the most. It is similar to "Neptune City" if you are already a fan of Nicole.
The new (came out last week) Muddy Waters "Soul Singer" remaster from Quality Records, 200g 45 RPM. Wow!!!

Also enjoying the Complete Riverside Recordings of Bill Evans, 180g 45 RPM set. I bought at the same time. Best I've ever heard these recordings. "Waltz For Debby" is just killer.
Patti Smith's "Outside Society". Excellent sound quality, nice package. Not a gatefold but cool record sleeves, liner notes and song explinations. Oh, and GREAT music!
I'll add Tune-yards "Whokill" to recent faves. The Givers new album "In Light" was a nice surprise as well.
Jean-Philippe Rameau
Intégrale des oeuvres pour clevecin (Complete works for keyboard, i.e. harpsichord)
par Scott Ross au chateau d'Assas (perf. by Scott Ross at his home in Assas, FR)

STIL discothèque 2107 S 75 (4 LPs)

I acquired this box set around 1987. I cannot possibly overstate how fantastic this is, compositionally, performance-wise and from a sound quality standpoint.
