RPWL is a new find for me although they've been around ten years or more. They started out as a Pink Floyd tribute band doing some of the more obscure stuff and also performed their own material. Now they do mostly their own songs but the singer still sounds like D. Gilmour and are very reminiscent of P.F.

dweller and arcam, have you heard the Steven Wilson remasters of Gentle Giant’s "Octopus" and "The Power and The Glory" on Blu-Ray? They are excellent. Just the ones that come to mind because I recently ripped them to JRiver: 1. Sanguine Hum 2. Out of Focus 3. Amenophis 4. Andy Jackson 5. Haken 6. William Orbit 7. Opeth 8. Timothy Pure 9. Embryo 10. Ashra / Ash Ra Temple 11. Bo Hansson 12. Marillion 13. Ozric Tentacles 14. Eloy 15.Anekdoten 16. Agitation Free 17. Lucifer Was 18. Osta Love 19. Camel 20. Caravan 21. Barclay James Harvest 22. Mythos 23. Riverside 24. Unknown Hinson 25. Hedvig Mollestad Trio 26. Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson 27. Tangerine Dream (not so obscure but not really mainstream) 28. 801 / Phil Manzanera 29. Steve Hackett 30. Jade Warrior 31. Pure Reason Revolution 32. Blues Pills 33. Horslips |
Thanks Arcam. It's a rather eclectic mix. It's almost a curse loving so many types of music. Anekdoten is a Crimson type band where Unknown Hinson is a little country and comedic. Sanguine Hum is a lot like Haken.
Andy Jackson is probably best known for his role as Pink Floyd engineer and co-producer. The music is similar. |
I actually saw Monty in Chattanooga at the Riverbend Festival a few years ago. I also have a DVD by him. Arcam I have some Montrose but no Gamma. I’ll check some of the others. I just got Flied Egg, Blues Pills, Pure Reason "Hammer And Anvil" Amenophis "Time" Tortoise "Standards" and a few more mainstream items. |
Arcam, One of the greatest if not the greatest prog albums of all time is Caravan's "In The Land Of Grey & Pink 40Th Anniversary" Remastered by Steven Wilson and containing a DVDA version of the album in 5.1. The song "Nine Feet Underground"
(22:40) is great. http://www.amazon.com/Land-Grey-Pink-40Th-Anniversary/dp/B004TPXVKS/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&a... |
Acam, Steven Wilson has been very prolific in his remixing activities. He has remixed in surround the first 5 or so King Crimsons, Jethro Tull through "Too Old To Rock "n" Roll" (he actually made "Aqualung sound good) the first 3 ELP albums "The Power and The Glory" and "Octopus" by Gentle Giant and more. He wants to do much more including ABBA. All while still making his own fine recordings. Whart, I am a fan of Opeth, their new one "Pale Communion" is good. They have finally done away with the "Cookie Monster" vocals due to voice damage concerns. |
Add the German band Jane to my list. http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Water-Earth-Air-Jane/dp/B00000716C/ref=pd_sim_15_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=41BpA... |
Arcam, Here’s when and where I saw The Flower Kings: ProgDay 1998 • SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th Crucible (USA) / Boud Deun (USA) / Soundscape (USA) / A Piedi Nudi (Italy) / Discipline (USA) / |
It’s been a while but I would give them 4.5 stars. We met the band before the show and they were all very pleasant but the two main guys, Roine Stolt and the other guitarist were pretty stuck on themselves. The highlight to me was meeting the members of Gongzilla. Who are ex members of Gong. They all seemed like wonderful people and very nice. They were playing in town Saturday night but we couldn’t go see them because it rained a lot and forced Progday to move indoors and run way late. One year we met George Underwood who did album covers for many artists including David Bowie and Gentle Giant. He had lot’s of stories and I bought some of his art. He was very gracious. I wish I could have spent more time talking to him. Haven’t been to Progday in many years but it was fun. |
Saw Davey Knowles tonight. He was great. "A musical phenomenon...a guitar prodigy" Paul Sexton, The Sunday Times" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OznU8W4-9dQ |
Arcam, I am a fan of Lucifer's friend. They have a recent release but I haven't heard it. https://www.amazon.com/Too-Late-Hate-LUCIFERs-FRIEND/dp/B01KVSST1C/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&am... |
It turns out I do have the latest Lucifer's Friend. It was given to me by a friend but I haven't listened to it yet. Do you have "You're All Living in Cuckooland" by Budgie? It's good. https://www.amazon.com/Youre-All-Living-Cuckooland-BUDGIE/dp/B000K7V8CM/ref=pd_sbs_15_5?_encoding=UT... Or " Life in San Antonio: Reunion Concert" It's good as well although the bass is a little too much. https://www.amazon.com/Life-San-Antonio-Reunion-Concert/dp/B00008ACIQ/ref=sr_1_18?s=music&ie=UTF... Budgie has always been big in Texas. |
