poping in one of the speakers

Hello In my preamp with or with out the remote ,if I hit the input selector, or put the amp in mute I get a pop through my left speaker, if I let the remote run up or down on the volume about every 2 seconds it will pop ? what is this and how to fix , the brand of the unit is not important ,it is
a expensive pre, thank you .
