This question needs to be focused a bit better. Best panel - Magnepan 20.1 Best 2 way monitor - kharma 3.2FE Best Full Range Dynamic-Magico Q7, Wilson Alexia properly amplified. Best HORN - JBL 15" with midrange Lens and Dukane ionovac plasma horn tweeter. (Best tweeter)Very believable and startling dynamics. Beyond subwoofer bass. Best Omni Directional - Numerous MBL speakers Best Electrostatic-Quad, Sound Lab depending on room Best open Baffle - Audio Artistry Beethoven, External Xover Legacy Whisper, Best Powered Speaker - Vaughn Loudspeakers Triode with restored Plasma Horn tweeters by Dukane. Stunning and giant killers.. honorable mention Dunlavy SCV, |
I doubt that anyone on this site is listening to speakers that provide a more musical, dynamic, detailed and accurate presentation than the JBL DD6700. Yes good ol' JBL-the company that provides dance music and classical music sound reinforcement--to the world. And they can be driven by any decent receiver of 100 watts to toe tapping delight or symphonic bliss.. Neat. |
I do'nt have lot of experience in speaker review except from dealer show room. But the best speaker ever on my system now are Acoustic Research AR 3 i paid $10 for the pair at a thrift store... I was that day at the right place in the right time. This speaker are sold an average of $1500 US on ebay. And i understand why...
The sound of AR 3 are difficult to explain... My only comment will be, do i will sales them? NEVER, will keep them all my life. That mean every thing. |
no 1 beveridge 2 sw with janis subwoofer and sequerra tweeter build your speakers system in your sound room.multi amps and multi channels to setup and flat pink noise setting. no 2 ......no more |
Hello Tbg The DQ 20's when first introduce, where excellent performers. Since they are over three decades old,It would be very rare to find a pair that is fully functional without some sort of repair or mod. Most of them suffer from woofer surround rot. My pair was extensively worked on by Mr. Bill LeGall of Miller Sound. It's truly astonishing the way they present the music. Very open and smooth. |
|
Joejr, Do you mean unmodified Dahlquist DQ 20's? While I lived on Long Island, I heard many modifications of these and was very impressed, but not with unmodified units. I moved away too fast to ever have a pair. At the time I had double Quad 57s. |

I really don't think this can be done unless one adjusts for the technology at the time. I think dynamic driver technology and tweeters have greatly advanced. I have twice owned Klipsch corner horns, which have to be one of the best compromise speakers of all time. I also owned two pair of Infinity ServoStatics. Two excellent windows to the sound stage. KLH Model 9s. I also had AR-3s, Rectilinear IIIs, Roger's LS3/5as (two pair with one atop the other), Fulton J Modulars and Premieres, Linn Isobariks, Avantegard Duos and Trios, and now the BMC Arcadias. All of these I think merit top rating in their time.
I remember a dealer welcoming me to hear the new Bose 901s, which he assured me would certainly replace my AR-3s. I listened and said I didn't like listening to elevator music coming from everywhere. About six months later he dropped the line. |
Tubegroover and Wildoats, I too strongly recommend the Nestorovic 5ASMkIV which I will never sell. The complete speaker. Midrange to die for, potent bass and silky extended highs. And at 91dB sensitivity my 70wpc tube amp drives them perfectly. Add to this... Aerial 10T, 20T Acapella MBL 101 Dunlavy SC IV, and V King Sound Stats Big Wilsons Maggie 20.1 TAD Reference Raidho
All great at different things, but musical at heart. |
The speakers I made at home world best and cheapest too. |
So a McDonalds hamburger is in the top ten meals of all time then? |
Top ten of all time? Thats a tough one depending what decade your referring to. However..the largest selling speaker of all time that would make them #1 in global sales is the large Advent. In 1976 one out of four speakers sold worldwide were Advent's. No other speaker company to date has matched that record. |
Hands down Dunlavy SCV with the proper Tube amps Pre amp and Cartridge. I would match my 2 channel room with ANYTHING out there.Just my humble opinion |

Green mountain audio !! Pick one ! I prefer the c-2's and they are 10 years old. They now have new stuff out I would love to hear.! 901's please ! You need to get out more. |
AR-3a's will always be in the top 100 of all time. I bought a set new in 1969, still have them and the invoice!
I've just purchased a set of AR-9Ls in remarkable condition...looking for amplification recommendations now on the 9Ls. Something in the 300/300 rms pc range.
Thanks! |
I just revisited this thread...I MUST add the Sound Lab speakers. I heard the M-1's ......great! |
Tubegroover, I have had the Nestorovic 5AS for 20 years. I love them. |
Memorable speakers through the years but taken in the context of great set-ups to showcase the possibilities. I have heard MANY highly acclaimed speakers that might have been better than they sounded because of poor or less than optimal set-up, one can't be separated from the other. A good example being Vandersteen which I have heard sound absolutely dreadful, dull and lifeless, at an audio show with Richard Vandersteen in the room no less. If one was to hear them for the first time in that set-up after reading about how great they are he would wonder what all the fuss is about. Almost any speaker can sound good or poor. Great sound, which I have heard from all the speakers on my list, requires a bit more which I'm sure we would all agree on?
Quad esl (including the original, 63 and 2905) These speakers are the BEST IMHO at natural, unfatiguing tonality and midrange purity Nestorovic 5AS Dunlavy SCIV Apogee (Stage, Duetta) Sound Lab A1 and A3 Infinity Ref 5 Verity Parsifal Encore Merlin VSM (owned for 12 years) Vandersteen (2 and 3 series) Sonus Faber Extrema |

Don't think any of these are in the top 10, but they helped a great deal of us become hooked on Audio.
Original Large Advent, Any entry level Magnepan, the 1.2, 1.5 and 1.6 Thiel. Any of the entry level Martin Logans.
And for their part the British have helped quite a few get started with KEF, Ouad, Rogers and others.
We all have to start somewhere and my progression of Magie 1.6 to 3.6 to 20.1 and with Thiel from 1.2 to 1.5 to CS6.
But the true "start" for me was the great Henry Kloss and nearly everything Advent did on his watch....ask Tomlinson Holman and others. |
Magnepan Tympani ID still sought after and command relatively high prices. Best bass from a panel speaker....perhaps ever. |
DCM Time Window 7 Signature Series.
These are rare, since there were only 200 matched pairs ever made...I have one and know where 2 more are :) |
Everybody probably know Yamaha NS-1000M - old unexpensive now speakers with beryllium mid and twitter. Since I am a JBL fan and love JBL bass, I went ahead and replaced an original Yamaha woofer with JBL 128H-1 woofer. The result was as expected. Very detailed, crispy, has JBL bass and below $1000. |

Best Category: MBL's Remarkable...incredibly dynamic, lifelike imaging Nearfield Acoustics Pipedreams Model 21 (owned 18's) Sound Labs A-1 (five years ago) Remarkable Clarity (Owned) THIEL CS5 (Owned) Ruler Flat, neutral Freq. Response and terrific CLARITY. 5i, later, improved bass dynamics.
Moment in time Award: IMF Studio Monitors: They were a scandalously high priced amount, $2200. in 1978--but made musical noises to my ears. I was in love but not ready to purchase at that price back then. Bud Fried was clearly a music lover.
Guilty Pleasures Award: Phase Linear Andromeda III Panel speakers with the following complement of drivers...5 vertically mounted tweeters, with diffraction cones for front and rear dispersion...two 4" drivers, one front mounted, one rear, and two 8", one front, one rear...then a sub with two 10's?. Outboard box for adjusting rear spl. In some ways, and certainly in their day, they were fun and dynamic and, had a life like quality that I enjoyed then. Oddly, I replaced them with Fried ALS 30's a little bookshelf speaker that was IMHO fun and very musical.
Fun trip down memory lane.
Good listening, Larry |
I've heard a lot of spkrs in the past & some i bought them. But only 2 spkrs that always back into my memory : Bobby Palkovic's Merlin VSM & Tierry Budge's Escalante Fremont . I've ever owned these spkrs in the past. They are not perfect , but get my real enjoyment in music.
Maybe i will get them again soon . Sigh... really hard to forget them. I really miss them. |
Tidal Sunray ( never heard T1 yet) |
New and Improved BOSE 901 series 6 version 2's. Go listen to these improved 901's for yourself... |
OK, I know it's subjective, but if any of the "Best 10 speakers of All Time" don't include a pair of:
Klipsch
Quad
Magnepan
AR
Wilson
all of them, then you've not listened to many speakers besides those you currently own, and you are no longer allowed to comment.
OK, I made that last part up, but really.... |
REFERENCE 3A GRAND MASTERS GENERATION II M5 4WAY NO CROSSOVERS!!! ONLY IF YOU LISTEN TO THEM YOU LL UNDERSTAND THAT THEY STAND REALLY ALONE!!!!!! JBL Paragon, Altec Lansing Voice of Theatre, Bose 901's, AR 3a's, KLH 4's, Dynaco |
accetturos@qwest.net YES! The IMF's were so beautifully voiced...when I voiced my LSA1 and LSA2's (Standard, Signature and Statements) those are the speakers that I had in mind. Of course, the goal is 'live music', but realistically, we've all been bitten by some speaker which we fell in love with at a moment in time, which haunts us. Bud Fried used to call me several times a month--and we'd talk about design and music--he was an amazing man. One thing I did with the design, was to overstuff the cabinets of the Statements, with real wool--the difference it made was remarkable. That was a Bud Fried 'basic'...natural fabrics for cabinets! I remembered, and so many years later, could find nothing better to use than natural wool.
But, top ten---MBL's big boys are the best IMHO. Followed by the LSA10's which never saw the light of day...but were fabulous nevertheless.

Well lately i had the pleasure of listening to a pair of modified Acoustat Spectra 6600, of course i have not heard every speaker out there, but at 64 years old i have listend to many, 2 channel audio as been my passion for more than 40 years, and dollar for dollar i haven't heard anything that even comes close, you can see pictures of those Acoustats in MrAcoustat member gallery on Canuck Audio Mart, the small ones are mine Acoustat 1+1s and the big ones are my friend Jocelyn they are Acoustat Spectra 6600, both where rebuilt by him with lots of T.L.C. |
