Tune of the Day
"Blue Rondo a la Turk" on the Two Generations of Brubeck album. Wow.
There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8? I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes. This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it. Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too. It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.
You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All". And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".
For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.
Anyway, that's my two cents today.

@slaw - Dude! Do you mind if I call you Dude? Why would anyone be PI$$'d at you. I can't see that you've ever done anything, except be enthusiast about music you like. That's certainly good in my book. Keep up the good fight and help out the unwashed masses with recommendations of good music. Happy Weekend! I'm out....... |

OK Guys, I can't take it any longer! I dropped Dawg Yawp on you a few days ago, and NO response? It's DAWG YAWP! A sitar based singing/songwriting duo with deeply introspective lyrics and a quirky delivery. I can't take it! You have to "Throw me a Bone" and provide some kind of feedback. FYI, In case you want to know the Dawg Yawp story, check out the World Cafe Interview below..... http://www.npr.org/sections/world-cafe/2017/01/09/508990230/dawg-yawp-on-world-cafe |
Nutty, U from Cincinnati? Dawg Yawp might resonate a bit more with you because they local. Discovered while working at Taste of Belgium in OTR. The World Cafe Interview is pretty cool if you get a chance to listen. The music is definitely modern folk and it might be not appeal to everyone. But it is new and it is different. And I'm always hearing from people that they want to hear something new and different. We'll here ya go.... |
I am in Cincinnati, hello neighbor. I checked your links for Dawg Yawp. I gotta say it is different. Not bad even. They are very talented and very unique. Honestly, it's not something that I would normally gravitate towards. And I like a wide range of music. But I'm going to play it again tomorrow. Maybe they will grow on me. Nutty, Yep, it's a little off the beaten path. Not often you hear a sitar fronted band. I think it's kind of cool, especially because they are local and were "discovered" while working as bus boys at a local restaurant I've been known to frequent. I also think the lead singer sounds a lot like another local guy - Chuck Clever from Ass Ponys and now with Wussy. |
Song of the Day! Adrian Belew combines with the Raisins to form the Bears. Pop Rock Perfections is the result...... If your foot is not tapping, or your head is not bobbing, your not doing it right.... The Bears - "Fear is Never Boring" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDRdnhnPZfw |
reubent, slaw, It is available on vinyl. I'm going to pick it up and I'll let you know how it sounds.... |
reubent, Nutty, I've never heard Swan. Hopefully I will cross their path someday. Ass Ponys were a major local band back in the mid '90's. The had some critical acclaim nationally with their album "electric rock music". It may be an acquired taste for some listeners, but it is a favorite of mine since it was introduced. The lead singer and songwriter from Ass Ponys is Chuck Clever. He's co-lead of the local band Wussy who have received considerable nation acclaim. |
Nutty and All, Here’s another local N. KY/Cincinnati Band that’s currently touring and making good records. Frontier Folk Nebraska I’ve seen them a few times and they are very good live. They play pretty regularly at Southgate House Revival and will be there later this month. I saw them there last year the nights they recorded their live album. Looks like they might be down at SXSW right now playing multiple venues. Check out "Desert Car Chase", "I’m Electric, Call me Lightning" and "Buffalo Summer" from their album "Frontier F**k Nebraska". Good stuff.... |
Nutty, Glad you are enjoying Frontier Folk Nebraska. It ain't folk, and they're not from Nebraska. :~) You guys should go check them out when they are back at Southgate House Revival. Really small venue, up close and personal. Bring earplugs! For another great local Cincinnatian's show, check out Adrian Belew when he returns to the 20th Century theater next month. I know you're a fan of guitar bands. He's a guitarist's guitarist...... |
Cracker - "I Want Everything" - Sets a great mood for a cold, damp, dreary day here....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxPwyMmG3Dw |
@folkfreak You win, but then, you are a folk freak.....just saying'.. I think a lot of people are surprised when they find out some great, well known rock songs are actually covers. Lots of examples, of which this is a good one. And, of course, Nazareth's big hit - "Love Hurts" is another classic example. |
Jesus Jones - "Right Here, Right Now". A catchy ditty from 1991. Still catchy.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rlQqWbp7rY |

@77jovian - I’ve really enjoyed the thread. Thank You for initiating it and thanks to everyone who has posted a Tune of the Day. I’ve been thinking about trying to post a daily tune of a track that has some meaning to me, or just a song I like and want to share. Some might be popular hits from the past and some might be more obscure. Also, they may be various different genres. Since this is an active thread, I figured it would be a good place to post my daily selections. Please let me know if I you think I should start a new "daily tune" thread or continue to use this one. I don't want to take over your thread...... Today’s offering: The Soft Boys - "Only the Stones Remain" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GQhi_1xNDQ |
Today's Offering - One of my all time favorite songs....... Richard Thompson - "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yw2yKNLEPc Was very fortunate to see Richard play this last month at the spectacular newly renovated Memorial Hall in Cincinnati. Gave me Goose Bumps....... |
Here's one of my favorites from the early '90's. Bonus is that the recording and sound quality are EXCELLENT. Put this on a high end system and crank it up....... dada - "Dorina" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0VDkzzSekQ Happy Weekend! |
The Jezabels - "A Little Piece"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4seYhgaETQ I first heard this song as background music in a a YouTube video of the incredible bicycle trials/free rider - Danny MacAskill called "Way Back Home" . Link is below for anyone interested. If you're not familiar with Danny MacAskill, or trials riding/free riding, Check it out. You will be amazed.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj6ho1-G6tw Enjoy........... |
Today's Tune - A West Coast Selection........ Camper Van Beethoven - "Camp Pendleton" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReaBNmXXvC4 From the same folks that brought you the classic - "Take the Skinheads Bowling". Who knew they had it in them.......? |
Today's offering is from one of my favorite song writers - Steve Earle. I've been listening to him since the beginning- Guitar Town, back in 1986. There have been many excellent albums since then. Hard to choose a tune from the catalog. Do you go with pure country, alt-country, singer/songwriter, blues, bluegrass, Americana or Rock-n-Roll? I went with one that combined several of these attributes.... Steve Earle - "NYC" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IWmS25SG34 Happy Wednesday! |
@ghosthouse - I love the Cracker S/T Album. It's fantastic, all the way through. Of course "Teen Angst" was the big hit that everyone remembers, and I like the tune. But for me the 2 great songs on the album are...... "Can I Take Mt Gun Up to Heaven" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79u-zSIrwSA "Another Song About the Rain" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8zuQH27Qjk Enjoy....... |
@loomisjohnson - Thanks for your reply. I liked both Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker back in the day. Alas, it's been nearly 30 years since "Pictures of Matchstick Men" on Key Lime Pie. I think Lowery has matured in that time, just like the rest of us. I think "Camp Pendleton" that I posted yesterday is a good example of that maturity. Here's another great example that shows where his head is more recently...... Camper Van Beethoven - "Northern California Girls" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OR23aPd4Jo Happy Wednesday! |
@loomisjohnson - This one's for you buddy. Evan Dando of Lemonheads - "Frying Pan" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA-yrX_CHWk This is off of the most excellent tribute/charity album for Victoria Williams, called "Sweet Relief". If you don't have it, you're missing out on some GREAT tunes...... |
