VSA speaker owners What did you upgrade to?

To all the VR owners out there, past and present, when or as you felt the desire to press on to another quest for speakerage, Exactly what did you press on and get?

Was it a big diff?

A little diff?

Glad you did it?

or wished you hadn't.

though I felt a need to ask other VSA owners these questions, anyone can chime in and perhaps we'll all get some other perspectives about loudspeaker changes.

While VR4 loudspeakers (Gen III, Jr, Sr) can do nicely with ample tube amplification, it's clear to me that solid state, hybrid or chip amp amplification brings them alive and controls their bass best.

For my system, the Moscode 401HR was absolutely the answer. The power and control of solid state with the sweetness of tubes.

Of course, if the goal is a system with low power amplification, then the VR4 will have to go...

I really did think about that amp. I got the impression that it simply wasn't going to work to my preffs. I just saw it as a bit too agressive for me.

Interesting you'd come to the conclusion that it would be too aggressive sounding (whatever that means) without listening to it...especially considering you could have auditioned it in your home for a month.

I have yet to read any posts from any 401HR owners who characterize the amp as being aggressive.

Had you auditioned the 401HR, and regardless of whether you had decided to keep it in your system, I am certain you would have come to a different conclusion.
Jim, my comment was specifically about your thought that the Moscode would be a bit aggressive. That's a characteristic that I have never read in context with the 401HR.

Of course the Moscode will not be appropriate for a SET sound.

What is your primary method of hearing/auditioning gear?
I have another dedicated room in which I have a comparable system and am running Totem Mani-2s there. They're a nice contrast to the VSR sound.

This is what I would expect if someone wasn't moving up the VS line. In other words, it would surprise me a little to read of someone going from VS to Tyler, or B&W, or another basically similar dynamic box speaker unless there was a significant tonal difference.

I would not be surprised to read of a few people who changed speakers to go to a completely different design, i.e. high sensitivity/impedance box speakers, single driver speakers, planars or horns.
Thanks, Newbee. It must not have been an issue for Wes considering be bought the Moscode.

It illustrates the difficutly describing in words how something sounds.
I would love to hear more folks thoughts on the Moscode amp. Especially those who power the VSA speakers. And what pre amp is being deployed with the amp.

I am using the 401HR and a Lamm LL2 Deluxe II preamp with VR4 GenIII HSE. The short version is that this is a great match. I doubt you'd be disappointed.
Mullard 12AU7 and RCA 6CG7 black plates. The Lamm has Mullard 12AU7, Mullard 6922 and Mullard 6X4.
