The "Savitri" with Janet Baker. One of my favorites! Not only is it a wonderful performance, it is one of my go to recordings for testing a systems ability to image properly.

I love the Argo "Coronation Anthems" too. Outstanding choices!!
Emorrisiv-

I am constantly amazed at how our listening preferences seem to dovetail each others! I have the two Harmonia Mundi recordings you mention above, and "Danses Du Moyen-age" spends a lot of time on my turntable.

I will keep my eye out for a copy of "English Sacred Music of the 16th Century"

As my good friend Rushton just posted, I concur whole heartedly with his assesment of "Witches Brew" and "Power of the Orchestra". Two other reisuues that are seeing of lot of play right now at our house.

Mo-Fi Silver label reissues of:

Dead Can Dance "Into the Labyrinth" and "Spiritchaser"

Buy them while you can, they are very well done.
The Chicago "CTA" is a first class debut album! A friend and I listened to last Sunday....
De Falla "Three Cornered Hat" (Ansermet/L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande) ORG 45 rpm reissue of the London CS6224

(last night)
Rush, I subscribed to the series of the first 10 releases. The first four arrived on Friday, but I have only had the time to clean and listen to the De Falla (Walker Prelude 4 step x 2 LPs)

The recordings are "high, wide, and well articulated" the sound overall is very good, Grundeman's new cutting lathe clearly living up to the hype. My copy has some surface noise, even after cleaning, on side 1.

I am looking forward to giving a thorough listen to the Albeniz next, as I can compare it to the Tape Project version and the "Super Analogue Disc" 33rpm reissue as well. I will post my impressions here.
Having listened to the Tape Project tape of the Albeniz, I think I am pretty comfortable with how it "should" sound. I agree that overall, the Super Analogue 33 is pretty good, it does lean toward the midbass and below. Backing off the VTA helps but it's at the expense of the other frequencies. If I get enough time tonight, I will clean it and give the ORG a spin and report back.
Tonight I have been playing a head-to-head comparison of Albeniz "Suite Espanola" ORG 45 rpm reissue against the Tape Project version (TP-005) 15 ips reel to reel.

First, the only other version I have extensive experience with other than these two is the Super Analogue Disc reissue at 33 rpm. I'll just say right off the bat that the ORG 45 has the Super Analogue beat by a mile on my system. I listened to the tape first to give my ears a benchmark and I am surprised at how well the ORG holds its own against the tape with respect to the separation and layering of instruments, including the castanets and celeste.

This is by far the best of the ORG reissues I have listened to with respect to sound quality and lack of surface noise.

If this piece is to your liking I would strongly recommend, investing the money to secure a copy before they are all gone. Those of you who have had the opportunity to hear the Tape Project version of this will find the ORG 45 close in presentation.
Thank God people are beginning to come out of the closet with respect to the Sheffield 24 "Firebird" It is my personal favorite, even over the Classic reissue of the Dorati/LSO. I have never even noticed the lack of a hall sound probably due to the fact that I am sucked into the performance that Leinsdorf wrings out of the orchestra and the enormous dynamic swings on that LP.

Russ - glad to hear you are enjoying the Albeniz from ORG. If it's any consolation, I played the TP tape head to head against the LP yesterday for a friend, and they preferred the LP.....

On the menu tonight:
Rachmaninoff - "Piano Concerto No. 3" Bryon Janis/Antal Dorati/LSO. Mercury Living Presence 180g reissue
Modest Mouse - "The Moon And Antarctica"
Rush,
I don't own a copy of the original Merc pressing, but have heard one in good condition a few times. I will say that the reissue is pretty faithful to the original in sound, maybe a tad brighter, with the double basses sounding a little more recessed. What can I say about Janis' reading of this piece? He is a brilliant performer, and all his emotive playing comes to the fore here. From the trills, to running the keyboard. An excellent outing from what I hope will be many more reissues from the Living Presence series.
Bach - "Concerto For Violin and Oboe" Kapp/Ravina/Roseman Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York

Stravinsky - "Firebird Complete Ballet" Dorati/LSO (Mercury SR90226 original pressing)

Comparing the original to the Classic Records reissue
Wellll-
The surface of the reissue is quieter, no doubt due in part to the fact that my original is a little beat up. Dynamics and soundstage are still there though. I'd say we have another winner reissue. I'm prejudice though as I love the performance. I feel the Sheffield/Leinsdorf/LA direct-to-disc recording still has the edge with respect to swings in dynamics and impact. But, the Mercury wins hands down for emotion and performance.
Prokofieff - "Lieutenant Kije" Reiner/Chicago (Chesky RC10, the spelling of Prokofiev is Chesky's, not mine)
