which dvd for under 1k

Funny how one day a component is one of the best, then all of a sudden out
of nowhere it's one of the worst.

Not so unusual. Often problems don't arise until months or years after a
product has been in service.

The Denon 3910 has been around for years, and the laser assembly problem
has surfaced over the last couple of years based on user comments in several
audio/video forums (specific quotes and URL addresses cited in previous
threads). Its sound is still deserving of the accolades, but the laser assembly can
develop problems, so caveat emptor.

Surely, we all hope to read on this site good experiences as well as bad,
whenever they might arise.

I wasn't sure where to post, I am glad you don't have a badge. My listen' pleasure is two channel and for the most part when listening to dvd I use the analog outputs.
HT will be a bi-product... I am looking for the best analog sound from a dvd player... Thanks for the suggestions to this point.

I'd avoid the Denon 3910. They have known issues with failing laser assemblies.

Don't know if this extends to the higher Denon models.

Not sure if you're joking, Paul. Do you mean DVD-A(udio)? It's been around a while...kind of came and went. Another high-rez format (192/24 or 96/24) Titles are fewer and further between than SACD.

Loomis - Have you compared the Oppo (either 983H or BDP93) to the others you are recommending over it? Just curious.

The Oppo does look like a winner if you want a universal player. The JVC has all the bells and whistles and claims to load in 8 secs or less and can be bought for 229.00 from Best Buy with free shipping. But it is not a universal player.

while the oppo that everyone raves about is great for video, at your price range i don't think you can touch denon or arcam universal players for audio. if you don't need blu-ray, you can get great deals on a used denon 5910/3910 or arcam dv-135/137. the integra units are pretty great for the prices as well.

I have the new OPPO Blu-ray Universal player (under the early adoption program). Stunning. Plays EVERY disc I throw at it, including DVD-A now with the latest firmware, and all for much less than $1K!

You may want to check into the pending release of Oppo's BD93.
