Will a DVD player work with a computer monitor?

I don't want to own a TV (too ugly), so I was wondering if a stand-alone DVD player will work with a computer monitor?

There is a nice device a friend uses to put video tape (or any video input) onto DVD with a DVD-RW. It cost about $400 at Best Buy I think. It even has a S-VHS input.
