Wood blocks underneath components?? snake oil?

Hi, I have read that putting some sort of woood blocks underneath components helps in the sound. In particular, I believe Ayre actually suggests doing this. Can anyone explain to me how this helps?

I have 'Tiptoes" (original ones) I have Size 10 chemical bottle stoppers (rubber) Over the years I have used them all in varied combinations. My current champion footers are the size ten bottle stoppers. I have dozens... all over the place.
