Triode vs. Pentode

I've been switching between Triode and Pentode modes on my VAC amp during the past week. This has been my first experimentation between the two. I'm having difficulty discerning a clear difference, and I'm enlisting the advice of you tube heads to explain what I should be listening for...

Thanks in advance!

Triode is thought to be somewhat smoother - in my experience the sound stage is more recessed. Pentode is more powerful and up front, at least in the one amp I have where I can make these selections. I have neutral speakers and generally I prefer the pentode amps. If I had speakers with an uptilted uppermid/high end I would probably prefer the triode.
Newbee, thus far I would concur with the recessed soundstage and reduced dynamics.
