One of my absolute favorite Nina recordings is a live one called "Nina at the Village Gate," from a show in 1961. My CD is on Roulette label. I have put this on many a night, it feels like you are at the club.
Sarah's (Sc53) recommendation is a good one. One of my favoritie recordings by Nina Simone -- can't remember the album title, but I think it was recorded in live concert and is on the Verve label -- contains a song called "The King of Peace Is Dead". Nina wrote and performed this song in tribute to Martin Luther King the day following his assassination. The whole album is very good, and the King ode is deeply moving.
The one on Bethlehem label, "The Original Nina Simone," from late 50s is fabulous, live in small club, w/ Don't Smoke in Bed, Little Girl Blue, Blue Indigo; also on CD...
My absolute favorite is titled "Nina Simone Sings the Blues", RCA Victor, LSP-3789. She does a version of "My Man's Gone Now" that is unequalled. The rest of the tunes are fabulous. Your girlfriend will love it and you!
