I believe mismatching components is common, including in dealerships. Amplifiers, preamplifiers and sources cannot necessarily be swapped into the same system, all other elements remaining equal, with the expectation that the resulting sound is optimal.
Therefore, it's important to do some in depth homework specifically about the output and input impedances of components assembled in a system being evaluated.
It would not surprise me if a system (or individual component) being evaluated did not sound its best simply because it was improperly matched.
