A scary thought from Ellery911

I've thought about this for a long time and being a newbie to high end I just had to ask.

In a world where you can get fake Luis Vuitton bags, fake high $ watches (Rolex, Patek Phillipe etc), and knock-offs of just about any high $ product, have there been any instances of fake high end stereo equipment and if so, how does one avoid being the unlucky buyer?

Agree that fake cables are THE big item to worry about.
Tips on fake cables:
The BOX: without the original box... Hmmm
The connectors: a number of complaints here have been generated by folks buying cables and discovering they are NOT factory terminated. FIND OUT BEFORE OFFER!
I Know we want to be trusting, (read suckers) souls, but the possibility of fraud in the used cable business is very large.
Buying a $2,000. pair of cables... ??? good luck.
Just my $0.02 and no offence to all the HONEST sellers, just please realize the huge possibility of fraud in cables and take care. Power, interconnect, speaker, makes no difference(Though some cables' designs would be much harder to fraudulently fabricate... )
Yeah, but I think they come out of the orient and have a Jadis sound system.
