@whitestix. In my limited experience, decent DACs often sound more alike than different. I think the one of the bigger issues is settling in on one that doesn't do something you don't like--perceived glare, thinness, digitalliness, metallickiness, etc. I have six in use, some from the same manufacturer, and they all sound different. But the differences in chips, cost, R2R v. Delta Sigma, etc. aren't nearly as big as differences in, for example, amps and speakers. I guess, on a limited budget, big money is probably better spent on other gear. I saw a thread awhile ago about someone, I think, considering putting a Dave in a budget system. Seemed a little silly to me unless there was a plan to fairly quickly upgrade the other pieces or there was a true love for the existing gear.
Anyway, one of the six is a Denafrips Ares, and it is probably the most "different" from the others. It is much "better," to me, than an Oppo 95. I hope you enjoy the demo and it works out for you. If I put it in the main system over a more costly DAC, I'd have a difficult time readily calling it an obvious weak link.
Take all that with however many grains of salt are necessary, because while I claim to hear differences in the DACs, I don't hear huge night/day differences in cables. :)
