Authenticity of Speakers

Hi all,

This is my first post on the forum. I am in process of building a home theater. I found a guy on craigslist selling Klipsch R-28f speakers, $500 for a pair. How do I check the authenticity of the speakers. Have anybody come across fake Klipsch products? He says, he got those from Storage Locker auctions. Should I trust these speakers?

Don't be suckered in by what you think is a low price. Something smells fishy here, so proceed with extreme caution.
$400 seems reasonable if they are in good condition, or brand new, $350 would sound better, of course. That brand new bit seems a little strange.

I do take seriously the warnings of our fellow hobbyists, and the warning on the Klipsch site, which is rather general and not specific to your model. So I would propose a little, simple, test that might set your mind at ease that the speakers are genuine, though it will not speak to the condition of the speakers at all.

Get the net weight of the speakers off of the internet. Take a bathroom scale with you and weigh the speakers. On the off chance that someone in Asia would counterfeit them, they would probably be well light of the actual weight. Just my 2 cents.

Most importantly, these are high production speakers and it will be easy to locate another used pair, if not in your locale. If you even have the slightest doubt about the transaction run, don’t walk. You will have other opportunities.
Thanks a lot @rlb61 and @viridian
I will check-in for the sake, but will probably pass on as it looks like too good of a deal.

Thanks again.
One thing that may be confusing is that the serial numbers may be removed from the backs of the speakers and the box. Of course, this is cause for concern, and one immediately thinks that they are stolen, but one of the ways that new goods end up for sale on this site, and other channels is that official dealers get rid of excess inventory by trans shipping stock to unauthorized dealers to raise some cash.

They will, sometimes, obscure the serial numbers so that it does not get back to the manufacturer that they are violating their agreement by selling through unauthorized channels. Warranty will certainly be void. And resale will be compromised as well, so that has to be taken into account in valuing the speakers.
The guy the guy bought a lot. They’re probably the real deal. Check em out and if they’re in real good shape , buy them.
I’ve bought tons of stuff of cl with no issues. Let your eyes tell you the truth.
Goid luck!
