Eunice Kathleen Waymon was born in Tryon, North Carolina on February 21st, 1933. There is no birth certificate for Nina Simone; she was born when Eunice Kathleen Waymon became Nina Simone by taking the nickname “Nina” meaning “little one” in Spanish and “Simone” after the actress Simone Signoret. Eunice Kathleen Waymon was a classical pianist, she applied for a scholarship to study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was denied admission despite a well-received audition. In 2003, just days before her death, the Curtis Institute of Music bestowed on Eunice Kathleen Waymon an honorary degree. "This was to correct a grave injustice." That was my point. |
