Yes.. the theory vs real world...I can guarantee some XLR ARE BETTER at low level detail than others. Theory or no theory. And it has zero to do with 'not meeting specs'.
I have no fish to fry on XLR brand. so not recommendations since how long is not given. Though the extra meters usually cost less than the first for many cables.
