I think power conditioning comes down to a matter of personal preference, and how a particular unit performs in a given home.
In other words, there's no perfect unit for everyone, and the same unit used in two different systems may meet with opposing points of view from the listeners.
In my system, I have always preferred passive conditioners to active/balanced conditioners.
I used Shunyata Hydra 2 conditioners for several years, and recently changed to Alan Maher Designs Reference Power Center V2. The sound is essentially the same, but the AMD unit cost me less.
