If you leave them side by side, you should do something to keep them the exact same distance apart. the spacewould somewhat depend on the sound. If you braid them, you should make a smooth braid, which keeps the wire in the same geometry for the whole distance.
So either leave them alone, or do a careful job. Just rushing through it to 'try it out' is not going to give very goodresults.
Otherwise it is just a matter of tryingthem out to see which sounds best.
The issue of braiding is that you would need to break in the wires all over again from the braiding process. And unbraidiing too.)
