Preamp Deal of the Century

If anyone is looking for a true "World Class" preamp at a very fair price..heed my advice. I just recieved a Supratek Syrah preamp that was hand built by Mick Maloney in Western Australia, and it is absolutely beautiful! This preamp is the best deal you will ever find. I would put it up against any preamp out there for both looks and sound. Price? $2500 for the Syrah (includes Killer Phono stage). Not into phono? Try the Chardonney line stage for $2100. Don't get me wrong, I am not associated with this company. I am just a very happy owner! This preamp is VERY dynamic, yet liquid. It conveys the sound of music better than any other preamp that I have ever heard! You can check out the Supratek website at www. cantech.net.au

What are the typical cartridge output specs for those using Supratek preamps? I'm using a Benz Micro Ace .8mv, and it seems just a touch hot in the highs...even loaded down to 100ohms. Wondering if the Cortese (without cartridge gain control feature) is designed ideally for lower output moving coils?
Hi Tvad, I'm using a dynavector karat 17d mk2, output .23mv, loading at 100 ohms. Thats on a Chenin Pre. What tubes are you using in the phono section of your preamp?
I am using Mullard 6922 (replaced the EH 6922) and the stock Philips SQ 6688. EH 6SN7 are used in the line stage.
The mullards are excellent tubes. I originally had the same condition with the high end being a little"hot" for my taste. I tried different 6922 tubes but when I put a pair of telefunken PC88 tubes in for the 6922s it took that little extra off the highs and sounded great in my system. The thing is, tubes that sound great in my set up may not do the same for you in your system. Good luck, hope you are enjoying your Supratek as much as I am.
I love the Cortese. My instinct tells me the gain is a just a little too high for my .8mv cartridge. I don't have the same issue if I run the table through my Wright Sound WP22C phono pre with dual mono gain controls. Just sold the Wright phono pre. Will probably regret it down the road. Excellent unit...
