What class of amplifier has the most high definition sound ?
Generally speaking, class A will have the lowest distortion and thus the 'PUREST SOUND'. Generally speaking, because execution can play a pretty big role in the results. BTW, the **kinds** of distortion can be more important than the amount; 0.005...
Looking for a feature-rich 2-channel integrated that can drive 2-ohm loads
Most ESLs have a low impedance at high frequencies. But even tube amps that might not seem comfortable on such a low impedance can do just fine- you have no reason to worry- nearly any solid state integrated amp will be able to drive the speakers ...
GaN-based Class D power amps
Ric, Ralph, anybody: can you explain the difference between Ice and Ice Edge modules? The ICE Edge is their latest stuff- integrated high and low side drive circuits, optimized dead time, higher speed, higher voltages (for more power) and so on.
Do electrolytic caps need burn in?
After sorting through all the choices, I finally settled on a huge pair of polypropylene 1000uF caps made for commercial power supply applications (solar power). I found them cheap on ebay. I got them custom mounted. All the highs and the de...
How I would measure cables
Power cables oddly are probably the easiest to measure, since you can do a lot of it with a regular DVM.Speaker cables and interconnects are harder, but I have a suggestion: rather than try to measure the cable itself, measure its effects on your ...
Long-Term Amp Storage Without Use: Bad Idea???
There's a really good chance that 10 years from now there will be better amps and better parts with which to trick them out.If you really plan to not use it that long, just sell it and buy a functioning amp 10 years from now. 10 years is a very lo...
Do preamps have a material affect on high level sources?
The balanced Backert Labs Rhumba would be a good example. Any preamp that supports the balanced standard would do the same thing. That is one reason balanced preamps can sound better- you don't hear the effects of the interconnect cable.
Backert Labs Rhumba preamp
:)  Glad to hear its worked out!
Do preamps have a material affect on high level sources?
So as you can see this talk about active preamps being able to control the cables capacitance, is a huge furphy, thought up by active preamp makers to aid in their product sales.Almost any audiophile on this forum has heard interconnect cables m...
One Amp To ‘Rule’ Them All....
No. With amplifiers - **all** amplifiers- its all about distortion- what distortion the amp makes and what distortion it doesn't make. Because the ear converts all forms of distortion into tonality (a fact that has been known since at least the 19...
GaN-based Class D power amps
No-one here should listen Ralph Karsten. He knows tubed circuits and that’s about it...Engineering school only spent a day on tubes when I was going to school. You figure it out.Actually, the first "digital amp" was the TACT. They do not have an D...
Do preamps have a material affect on high level sources?
^^Yes to all of the above.
Which Class D Amplifier? PS Audio, Ghent, Nord, Merrill or other???
^^ The reason we aren't using GaNs yet is we are in a prototype stage. We developed a means of eliminating the need for dead time circuitry in class D amps (for which we have a patent pending). The main reason to use GaNs is to minimize dead time (...
Do preamps have a material affect on high level sources?
A good preamp will have very low distortion at the levels needed to drive a power amp and wider bandwidth than the source. The main things that a good preamp brings to the table is a better volume control than the ones found in most DACs (there isn...
GaN-based Class D power amps
It was stated earlier in this thread that "there are no truly digital amplifiers".This is very wrong. They’ve been out for 20 years -starting with the TacT Millennium in 1998 and reviewed (that year) by Robert Greene of The Absolute Sound.There...
