DACs with word clock output??
Shadorne - actually I believe most pro-audio gear uses global master clocks to synchronize the digital streams in lock-step for post-record processing, not real-time playback. It is not jitter that they are dealing with, it is synchronization of t...
Best Digital Input from PC to DAC
Be careful of those "low-jitter" claims. Even Stereophile made measurements on Squeezebox and Sonos - they were both low according to them (under 500psec), and the Sonos was only slightly worse, and yet the jitter is obvious on both and a LOT wors...
Best Digital Input from PC to DAC
Cerrot - you have not heard every USB converter or DAC, so please reserve judgement. I will put my USB converter up against your Firewire anytime. I'm confident that I would win the shootout.I realize that you believe your system sounds great etc....
Best Digital Input from PC to DAC
Some USB converters were compared here:http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue39/ramblings_computer.htmIf you are using XP on a PC, then I would recommend unmapping the device if possible and using Foobar 0.8.3Steve N.Empirical Audio
Should a dac run hot??
Depends on the voltages inside and whether it uses linear regulators for DC. The more voltage drop through a linear regulator, the hotter it gets. Most use linears. Also if the transistors or op-amps run class-A, this will generate heat too.Steve ...
IPOD with USB? Apple TV as music server? Options?
If you dont mind the fact that most WiFi devices are limited to 16/44.1 (same as CD), then just go with an AirPort Express ($99) that drives Toslink to a reclocker to a DAC. This can all be behind your rack. This will give you great audio quality ...
Ripping CDs to lossless in Itunes.. HiFi approved?
I've had a number of customers report that AL files dont sound as good as .wav or AIFF. Just anecdotal. Mostly whan transmitting WiFi with AE or AppleTV.Steve N.Empirical Audio

Slim Devices Duet
Ar_t - It is imperative that you upgrade the software on the computer and the firmware in the receiver and transmitter (remote). They have been doing lot of bug fixes at Logitech/Slim Devices. Last time I did this upgrade, it worked perfectly. The...
Optical Digital Interface - Good or Bad?
Ar_t is correct, Toslink causes the most jitter of any of the digital interconnects, primarily because of the conversions from electrical to optical. However, this is not the only jitter issue. The Duet jitter is still there. This can only be remo...
Optimal digital cable length -- science or voodoo?
Kijanki - I used to mod lots of transports, all kinds, to improve the rise-time of the output driver. It usually allowed the customers to use a 1m cable rather than the 1.5m, saving them some money. Of course the mods cost money too. I dont mod tt...
Optimal digital cable length -- science or voodoo?
Here is my white-paper on the subject:http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue14/spdif.htmMy findings were independently verified in a double-blind test that was published in a past issue of UHF magazine from Canada.Steve N.Empirical Audio
How important is direct USB connection into DAC?
Tobias - it's too bad he didnt review the Thingy, but the results can be predicted. It uses the same hardware as the HagUSB and Trends.
Why Mac Mini Over Slim Systems Products?
Ecruz - you can see iTunes on the Touch.
How important is direct USB connection into DAC?
Depends entirely on the USB interface. They are not all equal. Chips are different, USB software is different and implementation is different. You can still run USB to your non-USB DAC using a USB converter. Some are excellent, even better than th...
