Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
Piano is an instrument about as difficult to reproduce as there is. As jafant just said, both percussive and melodic, it's frequency range also being very, very wide---very low to relatively high. That makes it very revealing of the octave-to-octa...
6922 Tubes!
Wow, thanks a million Brad. Yeah, Lake Oswego is only about a half hour drive from me. Jena Labs has a dealer in Portland too, Echo Audio. Rather than paying Upscale more for each tube, maybe I can take all my tubes to Jena and have them treated. ...
Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
I remembered the term! Back EMF, or electro-magnetic force. That’s what the woofer sends back to the power amp, different amps responding to it in different ways. I believe amps employing a lot of negative feedback have a more difficult time deali...
Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
Power amps DO interact with the speakers they are hooked up to, (particularly at high and low frequencies), different drivers in different ways. Dynamic woofers are well-known to send a signal back to the power amp, though I forget what that pheno...
Boulder monoblock 2150
One reason very wealthy people rarely have a high-end system may be that they aren’t as passionate about music as are we. I got my first better-than-normal system because I heard music played through the one of a friend, and it radically improved ...
Wilson Audio Haters
For transparency and openness, no loudspeaker using dynamic drivers is going to equal an electrostatic or ribbon, imo. Magnetic-planars, though perhaps not as transparent as ESL’s, are also very open sounding. None of these will play as loud, go a...
Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
Here’s a thought regarding the "timing" ability of a component: Being a drumset player, I value the "rhythm & pace" abilities of a component and/or system as much as anyone. Both Art Dudley and Herb Reichert make this ability a large focus of ...
6922 Tubes!
I notice that Upscale offers cryo treatment of the tube. What is the claim of that for tubes?
RCA or XLR iInput Shorting Plugs or Pins
Guess I was being too harsh :-(. I still question Cardas’ motives, however. George, why not do the soldering necessary to make the plugs shorting, so they provide a sonic benefit? The user will need to know not to insert them in output jacks, thou...
Loudon
Loudons Last Man On Earth album from 2001 is fantastic, a particular favorite of mine. Loudon hit the scene before Stringbeen, making him the original new Dylan ;-).
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
Good point Ralph. It's great when ones taste in speakers and amps happens to allow a synergistic match---a tube amp with the Quad 57 ESL, for instance.
LONDON Decca, Tzar DST and similar cartridges
That's the cartridge I'm looking for myself, topoxforddoc. I already have a London Super Gold with Decapod and a Reference, but the Decca MkIV C4e has it's own, unique, qualities. Regarding the loading of the Reference, John Wright himself recomme...
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
I was surprised when I learned that some choose their power amp first, then look for a speaker it can drive well. I thought the notion that speakers, being transducers, vary much more in sound that do amps was universally agreed upon, and should t...
Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
All good comments---everything matters! Reproduced music still, after all this time and effort, sounds very different from live, and undoubtedly will for the remainder of even the youngest of Audiogoners lives. But it can already sound close enoug...
Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
Just an opinion here, on the subject of the ability of any given component to provide an emotional connection to the music it is reproducing. That concept implies that that ability is separate from sound itself, that the sound of music alone does ...
