I'm still working to love digital, are you?
If you will tolerate a viewpoint from someone firmly in the digital camp, I think Ehider's illustration, just above, is an apt one. After years of listening to both live and recorded music with ears that have generally, sometimes grudgingly, been ...
Professional vs. Consumer speakers
My brief experience as a "consultant" (supposedly, I knew something about how 19th century English choral music was supposed to sound...) for a small studio/production company introduced me to many of the realities of the recording industry touche...
Sellers adding for PayPal use is plainly BS
Well, we all have our quirks and blind spots. As previously noted, I will buy only from sellers who ship COD. They don't wanna do COD, we don't do business, it's that simple. Interestingly, despite all the indignant sellers who got up on their hin...
Fraud alert Fair warning to Audiogoners.
I think we're all grateful to Glreno for putting us wise to this apparent fraud. At the same time, I think we should give ear to the questions raised by Gary Boren. In times of national crisis, or even ongoing national stress, the temptation towar...
what is the best super speaker and why?
Albert, I must admit that it has been a number of years since I heard a Soundlabs system up close and personal. Your point is well taken.will
Which SPEAKER for the 21ST century?
Twl, your argument is a good one but at the end of the day it doesn't pass muster. First, as to the organ work with the occasional 16Hz pedal tone, yes, a system that will not reproduce that pitch is recomposing (or decomposing) that work. If the ...
Which SPEAKER for the 21ST century?
The reason in a nutshell, Twl, is that you won't be hearing what the composer intended you to hear. Some folks aren't bothered by that but many of us are not content to recompose standard works, especially from the "classical" repertoire. I wrote ...
How do you determine how much to spend on speakers
Well, dj, that's what makes life interesting. I wonder if the difference between UK and USA has to do with the oft-cited "fact" (which isn't that at all, of course) that all UK speakers sound pretty much the same.I do think that there are more sim...
High End Components - How long do they last?
Well, I routinely listen to the BBC on a Collins R390A receiver that is nearly 50 years old. Except for cleaning, alignment, and tube replacement, it has never had any downtime. Hardly audiophile sound, to be sure, but it does put pay to the myth ...
what is the best super speaker and why?
You know, I just re-read my post and it sounds like I'm really slamming those speakers. Not so...at least that isn't my intention. They are both clearly world class. But both have, in my view, little flaws that keep them from being absolutely on t...
what is the best super speaker and why?
Well, Albert and Bio, FWIW I don't care a whole lot for either of your choices. No matter what is being played on Avantgardes I hear "Winchester Cathedral" in the back of my head. Purely psychological, I'm sure. God knows they're gorgeous beasts.W...
WEL -- Wife Equivalent Language
Your prelate's ex usually spoke of "that THING in the other room" as though it had a life of its own. When she felt I was getting too hifalutin, she would affect a British accent and talk about "vahlve ahmplifiers" and faceplates made of "meticulou...
5 channel amp for Paradigm Studio 100's
All the amps named here are good choices. I'm partial to the Paradigm/Parasound combination but would suggest the 1205A (5x140) rather than the 855. $1199 list. The big Paradigms benefit from lots o' watts.will
How can I solve the harshness of my system's sound
The Paradigms do have aluminum dome tweeters but reviewers have unanimously agreed that they are NOT harsh or grainy with either tubes or SS. I think you need to look upstream from there.will
Perfect room size...
Thanks to all of you for this good advice. Any other suggestions will be welcome.will
