Decent software for classical LP collection mgmt?
I use collectorz, mainly because it can read bar codes. I keep vinyl in a separate data base from cd's, easier to handle. From time to time I merge the bases into a single base for searching only. Entry is done is each base. Yes, many vinyl titles...
Original vs. imitation ; MC275 vs. Cayin A88T
I have compared the A88t, which I have, to the 275 of a friend which he loaned me for a month. The A88T still has the original tubes and now has about 1000 hours on it. The 275 had over 500 hours on its tubes when I used it. The 275 is owned by a ...
How are Proac 1 SC's at low volume levels?
I have a pair. A small room, 11x12. I drive them with 60 watt tube mono blocks. As for low levels, don't really know what your 'low' is. Typically I play mine at 75-80 db. Great sound. I also have a pair of ProAc 140's and they also are tubed. My ...
Tone controls? Sorry about the heresy.
Why not, if it pleases your ears. Equalizers, also yes. A unit that gets great reviews is the Technics 9010. The latter lets you adjust the band width in each of its five frequency bands, so it is fun to play with. Also, some hi end software that d...
Audio By Van Alstine Amps/Preamps
Great products with outstanding sound. Frank just intro'd a new amp at the RMAF for about 1700, which is a bargin. Check it out.
apodizing filter sonics
"move digital closer to the analog realm"? Your not serious, with such a statement. Filters are just more junk you put in the signal path in no way can they shape the digital signal into an analog one. If you want analogue, just start with it as a...
Improve my system
Room treatments. While these can be madding to select, it offers the best bang for the buck. Check out Toole's 'Sound Reproduction' book before you make any changes.
Record Cleaning Backlash
Steam, steam and more steam. It works wonders and a unit at Walmart will set you back $25. If your not impressed with the results, back it goes. But then again, the unit is great for doing other types of cleaning and pressing.
Recommendation of a good nearfield speaker
ProAc 1sc is hard to beat. I have those and a ProAc 140. Seems the 1sc wins, all the time. But of course, all listening must be done with the grilles off.
Advice on adding a sub to my system
Think two. Check out Tolle's book 'Sound Reproduction', he makes a strong case for two subs, not one.
Tweaks
Leave the room, you components! Yes, all this talk about vibration misses something that should have been obvious to this subject, and that is isolate your components, especially vinyl stuff, to an adjacent room space. That way, all the acoustic e...
My NAD reciever has no sound , Any suggestions
Get the unit back to the US distributor and let them get it fixed. You will pay the shipping cost to get it there, but it still is the way to go. These authorized' factory' service places are a rip off in that they get paid very little for warrant...
Room treatment products at RMAF
Looked but could not identify. The stands look like things that are available in the pro audio market.Exhibitors are never big on room treatment as the business model is 'show and tell', listening is optional. It would be interesting to know if an...
Nad c-370: Right Channel drops out
Seldom is it cost effective to repair any electronic unit where the original, new cost was less then $1K. Typically any repair will cost $180 plus. and that is just for the estimate and shipping cost. Think about it, a used, in perfect operating c...
Why Rhodium?
Waste of money. Recently rhodium commodity prices have sky rocketed, so it falls into the hi-end trap of 'more expensive, must be better'. A friend, who is a material scientist with a PhD, tells me its electrical properties suggest it worsens curr...
