Rack Advice
ndmaitre: i quite agree with all the earlier posts re: decoupling, floating, etc. but suggest you scrap the idea of using wood veneered shelves. get some exotic wood for the posts and rails and use a resonance deadening shelf material, such as tha...
Tweaks
just to be on the safe side, i removed ALL carpet in front of and between my speakers and replaced it with bent-grass sod. it was a real trick to adjust the sprinkler system so the overspray doesn't reach my amp but , now that the tweak is complet...
Fuse or braker for dedicated lines?
bishopwill: ok, you wanna' be consistent: tell us YOUR experiences with different fuse/breaker types. if you have no such experience, then you've no right to criticize, even politely, those who do. now do you understand MY point? -cfb
Acoustic Energy and Totem
i owned ae-1's several years ago that i powered with a pair of rowland model 1's ran bridged. ( i also added a pair of entec lf-20's later on -what fun!) one of my sons owns ae-2's that he powers with an accuphase integrated (e-306); he's recently...
Skipping vs. Drop Outs not "High School "
brad: AFAIK, "drop outs" are generally, if not always, recording or production faults present on the cd. they are manifested by a sudden drop in volume or an extremely short bit of silence where sound ought to be. "skipping," OTOH, can be caused b...
Mark Levinson's Guide to Better Sex
didn't jimmy cliff do the soundtrack for the soon-to-be released motion picture based on the book? as i recollect its titled "the harder they come." -cfb
Fuse or braker for dedicated lines?
bishopwill: fact is, worldcup has been around here longer than you have. and, while he may not be quite as articulate as our newly-anointed shrink/confessor, he does have an attribute missing in your makeup: a desire to learn without the constrain...
Greatest Songwriter of all time
mes: thanks for your second on guy clark's "cold dog soup" but townes van zandt didn't write any of the songs on that cd. sure you're not thinkin' of "poet-a tribute to TVZ." guy's on that one, too. -cfb
Most eye-opening upgrade and what you learned
judith: welcome to the 'gon! having been at this hobby for roughly 35 years, i've had quite a number of eye (or ear)-opening experiences. i'll share a couple:first, listening to my lp's on a decent turntable after they sat neglected for a couple o...
Best Web site for Audio.
here are a couple of great sites that provide links to manufacturers. the first site also lists publications and lots of other stuff related to audio. the second is hyper-linked:http://www.wssh.net/~wattsup/arsl.htmlhttp://www.1388.com/directory/a...
Under rated speakers due to price....?
jimmy: there's a fly in your ointment. i've listened to <$2k speakers played on $100k worth of electronics and they sounded great. but most $20k speakers played with the same electronics in the same environment sounded much better. i know you a...
Greatest Songwriter of all time
john_l: for a great intro to guy clark, i'd suggest one of his latest, "cold dog soup." wonderful stuff.-cfb
Mark Levinson's Guide to Better Sex
rumor has it that mark's dad had 1/4 komodo dragon blood coursing through his veins. which, of course, would explain mark's (reputed) 12-inch tongue. -cfb
Greatest Songwriter of all time
of course bob and bruce rule. i'm surprised, tho, that no one's put any female singer/songwriters on their lists (but for joni mitchell). how about: carole king, ani defranco, shawn colvin, iris dement? and on the male side, how can pete seeger, ja...
New amp models from Krell, how about preamp ?
if krell remains true to form, of course there'll be a new pre. i mean, there's been a new model pre in the line every quarter for the past 10 years. and so it goes. or so it seems. -cfb
