| Any meaningful differences... I do most of my listening to a pretty good quality desktop audio system these days, with or without headphones. One of my headphone amp/preamps, the Violectric V281, is a very fine system preamp, as good as any I used in the big 2-channel system d... | |
| best interconnect at decent price I second another poster's comment about Transparent's "The Link." I've also had excellent results with Audioquest's Black Mamba ICs (widely available at sites like Music Fidelity & Audio Advisor). In my experience, the cheapest yet good-soundi... | |
| Magico A3 vs. Joseph Audio Perspective vs. Spendor D9 I'm enjoying this thread immensely. Audio really gets more interesting when people dwell on their subjective impressions/experiences of this or that speaker, as compared to spec-wars about them. It's also quite amusing to see something play out her... | |
| Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. Roger, glad to see you pop up in this thread. I still own 2 RM-9s from the mid-1980s. At my request, you modded each to become pentode/triode switchable (dropping total power from 100 wpc pentode to 50 wpc triode). That amp in triode mode + Vande... | |
| My first Tube Amplifier 1st (and last) tube amp was the Music Reference RM-9. I had 2 of them. Had both modified by the mfr to be pentode/triode switchable (a switch mounted next to each of the 8 tube sockets). With EL34s or KT88s, triode was a taste of heaven IMO--at th... | |
| More expensive DAC the answer? forgot link to R-1:http://www.audio-gd.com/R2R/R1/R1EN.htm | |
| More expensive DAC the answer? You have to spring for the current model, R-1 (link below), &799 + shipping. That's not dirt-cheap, but it's still way less than most balanced output DACs. BTW, Schitt may have something cheaper w/balanced outs. Not sure about that. | |
| 84k speakers... Big disappointment Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Perhaps it's time to return to "speaker basics," focusing on the tried & true, successful names & designs. A few ideas for floorstanders of quality from:-- Spendor Audio-- ATC (I own the SCM12 Pro..... | |
| Can you live with your current speaker until you die? funny question. it would be easier to answer if I knew my death date well in advance... | |
| More expensive DAC the answer? correction: "You can easily use is as a DAC only, however..." | |
| More expensive DAC the answer? Addressing the digital question only (amps & room treatments are worthy side topics, as others noted)--I found a very large increase in my appreciation of digital audio just by ditching delta-sigma DACs and going to multibit, especially NOS (n... | |
| VPI Prime or Scout or ??? +1 on the Grado MM cartridge. I had the best one he made circa 1986 (after ~5 yrs of struggling to get MCs to sound humane in my system). I never looked back.I also had Grado's tonearm, a real thing of beauty that I bought used and installed on my... | |
| Autoformers, The Benefits in matching amp to speaker I don't know a thing about autoformers. I only post to say Roger Modjeski/Music Reference is the real deal...I would tend to believe whatever he posts here, based on past experience. In the last 1980s I had 2 X RM-9s. If memory serves, I bought eac... | |
| Mytek slams Hypex in Stereophile Amp Review Class D amps remain controversial in high-end circles. I did a lot of reading about them before finally buying one (a used Wyred4Sound ST-500 built around an ICEPower core) to use w/my ATC SCM12 Pros. I was struck by how balkanized much of the com... | |
| Dearly departed Music Reference RM9 Just seeing this (by now 15 month-old) thread. I hope someone will see this reply.I actually own 2 RM9s (the original model). I got them used (perfect condition) in late '80s. Used 1 for 3 years; never actually used the other. Both have EL34s; 1 a... |
