Replace VPI TNT rubber belt with nylon thread
Do both spans. The short length between the motor and the flywheel likes more tension than the platter span. Heavy cotton or poly thread requires a bloodknot; thicker silk requires a loop knot with the knot positioned to travel on the outside of t...
Your First Vinyl Album.
Sam & Dave's Greatest Hits & The Who Live at Leeds. At the time I didn't get The Who, but I did identify with Townshend's nose.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lew, The more so as an MCC1 sold yesterday for $600. Reminds me of an old Don Henley lyric that goes something like, "It was a great little town before guys like me came here and ruined it."
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Yikes, The $500+ just paid for an NOS B&0 on ebay has brought many more sellers out of the woodwork.
MG1 air- bearing tone-arm
Suggest you read Arthur Salvatore's text-- particularly regarding MG-1 bearing noise-- athttp://www.high-endaudio.com/RC-Tonearm.htmlAny air pulsing will adversely affect stylus. While this arm is cheap, the recommended pump is not. Then check out...
How do you judge your system's neutrality?
Bryon, your constructs are interesting, and in conclusion testament that "what we observe is not nature herself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning." Heisenberg
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
For anyone who wants to take on a project, here is a post I made today regarding continuously variable cartridge loading using optocouplers. I posted it to AA as photos are more easily added there. I would be glad to share a parts list if desired....
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul, may I add to your remarks. IMO once the rest of the system "arrives" at a certain level of refinement, it is possible to enjoy a relatively wide range of cartridges without much preoccupation as to which is best. Put another way, top systems...
SHOW attendees: please post speaker reports here
Bob, The uber-Hansens were spectacular with Tenor amps. However, their looks necessitate having a wife very large on top and of small bottom to achieve balance.
BAT at CES?
jeez louise bstefano, the look is at least timeless in the manner of Lamm and other top tube equipment. If you must have industrial design, then go SS with JRDG or Krell. Fact is this was one of the top sounds at CES/THE Show.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I spent a half day bedding in a Helikon with Soundsmith's optimized line-contact stylus re-tip on original Lyra boron cantilever. This replaces an Empire 888X-EX with fresh NOS .2 x.7 mil stylus that has been happily singing on Trans-Fi linear air...
BAT at CES?
At CES the REX monoblocks were very transparent, fast, and linear top-to-bottom, with improved frequency extension and bass control. REX has none of the slowness and over-ripe plushness and toobie sweetness of the -SE version. I have heard Shashas...
Sundsmith rebuild.
Hi Bicycleman, I received my OLC-retipped Helikon several days after my above post, followed by an email from Peter. I will shortly mount up for a listen.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Hi Raul, You mention above that you are not adding any capacitance to your phono stage anymore. Would you suggest that I take the same approach with my combo of balanced ARC PH-2 and Hovland Music Groove IC? At input of PH-2 there is one fixed 220...
anyone know John Doe and the Sadies?
One of the most interesting albums of the year-- particularly on the songs where Doe fuses surf and blues reverb guitar with C&W. Excellent SQ on vinyl. This and Fogerty "Rides Again" were the best country rock of the year.
