Strain gauge vs Zyx 4D/Atmos
Paul and I heard the Strain Gauge in Peter's room at RMAF 2008 (apparently not the current version). We're also intimately familiar with ZYX 4D/Atmos, having penned the first ever review of that cartridge. See my signature. From this experience I a...
Skating force at 45rpm
The linear groove velocity of a 12 inch LP is about 2 1/2 time faster at the beginning of the side than at the end. If the anti skate was that dependent on speed you would need to slowly change it as the record plays.Quite correct, and your conclu...
Skating force at 45rpm
Glai, Your experience makes sense, both in theory and from my own. RIDING ON A BEAM OF SOUNDFrom the stylus's POV, a higher groove velocity is no different than an increase in transient velocity. If we sit inside the stylus and look outward, we ca...
ZYX Omega or UNIverse?
VTF This varies by sample so my exact number or anyone else's is irrelevant. I've had UNIverses happiest at 2.00g, others happiest at 1.40g and everywhere in between. In addition, every sample changes its optimal VTF frequently due to aging, weath...
ZYX Omega or UNIverse?
Glad to hear it (not about the capacitor of course!).The downside is that to get all the way there, the UNIverse is hyper-critical about setup. You can get 70% of its capabilities very easily, it will never sound ugly. You can get 90% with a fair ...
ZYX Omega or UNIverse?
Regarding the A90, based on one evening's hearing in an unfamiliar system I'd at least consider putting it on a similar plane to the UNIverse. It's one of only a few cartridges that Paul can listen to for any length of time. It's one we would have...
ZYX Omega or UNIverse?
Wrm57,Paul and I assessed the Omega in our system shortly after it was introduced. We declined to publish a review. As others have suggested, if you want an accurate, neutral, lifelike cartridge to form the basis for building a reference class syst...
What is the best storage for cartridges?
Agree with Larryi. Oxidation seems like greater risk for permanent damage than "drying out". I'm thinking a chamber filled with nitrogen might be best.
Are there any advantages to mc over mm?
Additionally, depending on the input sensitivity and headroom of your MC stage, the output of the Benz might cause overload. This isn't likely to damage anything (except your ears, if you forget to reduce the gain control!) but it could cause some...
Best Record Cleaning Process on a Loricraft
Sunnyboy, glad you're enjoying ever-improving results. We also demag our LP's, with audible improvements as Peter described. We use an industrial tools demagnitizer. These are available from industrial supply houses for < $100.
Anti skating SME V
The behavior described in the OP is normal on any properly set up rig (assuming a pivoting tonearm and an offset cartridge mount). Fact: when a stylus contacts a spinning LP surface, skating forces immediately act to pull the tonearm inward Fact: ...
are all used LPs dusty?
1) Yes and no. New or used, all records benefit from proper cleaning. Cleaning not only improves the sound, it reduces the chance of permanent groove damage which can result from dragging a diamond chisel through a plastic groove filled with (micr...
MM Cartridge or MC Cartridge
Agree with Audiofeil. In my system, which is optimized for LOMC's, I've yet to hear one which costs less than ~$2K significantly outplay several sub-$200 MMs. An LOMC that costs ~$600 would be a waste of money IME. For the same money I could buy 3...
How important is the tonearm?
