Pass Aleph 5 vs. Pass XA 30.5 / 60.5
Reason for a subwoofer with the Alephs is to get greater control (taughtness) of the lower frequencies. Need a good crossover. The Alephs do sound very musical, but sometimes we (me included) want a bit tighter bass than generally what is heard live.

And if you add a decent SW to the Alephs, OH MY!
More power for better sound at low volumes?
There are many factors that play into this. It's complex. Suffice it to say, I would look for a low wattage ultra amp, like the Threshold SA3.9e, a class A 60 watt stereo amp. These low wattage ultra amps are designed to sound there best - the swe...
a solid state amp that is recessed in the treble
As Ralph and I previously stated, odd order harmonics may be an issue. From my personal experience, you should try single ended Aleph amps. They are not push pull and thus minimize odd order harmonics and thus don't sound harsh in the treble for t...

are you sure the issue is too much treble as opposed to too much odd order harmonics?
best bang for buck on used ht speakers? maybe b&w?
I can say from my experience that the matrix series works well for HT. My setup is 802s for mains, HTM for center, 805s for sides. The consistent voicing of the speakers works very well in the room. For subs, the JL audio mates well with the matri...
seek a threashold power amplifier
1 horsepower is about 750 watts.
Which amp for B&W 802 Matrix series 3
Agree with lloydelee. The 802/3 work well with lots of power. They work well with mcintosh but I prefer Nelson pass amps for my 802/3. If you move them away from all walls and add a subwoofer to add a touch of weight in the lower octaves, they are...
seek a threashold power amplifier
I've seen a few SA12e amps for sale over the past 5 years. Never a S1600e. But if you found the SA/12e amps, I think you'd be hard pressed to give up their class A sound just to convert them to 1 hp under class A/AB bias. I would think it more lik...
seek a threashold power amplifier
Higher bias into class A results in a more sweeter sound also. That is why Nelson preferred the 60 Watt stereo SA3.9e. Relative to the other SA series Thresholds, it was biased higher into class A per watt.Main issue is heat.
seek a threashold power amplifier
Pbnaudio, study the STASIS design and you'll see.
seek a threashold power amplifier
Component wise, the SA12e and the S1600e are identical.
seek a threashold power amplifier
Threshold didn't make a 1 horsepower Class AB amplifier in the 80s. They did make one in the late 80s/early 90s. It was called the S/1600e. It used the same chassis as the top of the line Class A SA/12e but was biased to operate in AB.From my book...
