ELP laser turntable - any comments?
Tbg...That's what I would expect based on my experience with the Halcyonics. Enjoy!
battling the pops and clicks
Lugnut...Perhaps you didn't notice or have forgotten that about a year ago, encouraged by postings by you and some others, I made a very deliberate reevaluation of today's vinyl playback equipment. I did this by visiting the high end emporium that...
battling the pops and clicks
Lugnut...Pop and Click eliminators are no longer marketed for the simple reason that those who are annoyed by surface noise, have switched to digital media. Also, they don't work all that well, except for really bad discs, and I quit using mine lo...
battling the pops and clicks
Larkyparka...Without getting into the arguement about whether vinyl surface noise exists, I must correct your statement that before CDs came along no one was bothered by surface noise. Most preamps had "scrach" filters, and many outboard electroni...
Why Linear Tracking never took off?
Willster...Your PS X800 is obviously broken. This happens to the best of equipment after 25 years. How it sounds probably has more to do with the pickup used. Most of the time mine was used with a Shure V15MR, and that particular pickup never soun...
MMGs flat with Complex Music
For massive sounds, like symphony orchestra or theatre organ, I don't think that the MMG can give you really satisfactory volume. I have three MG1.6, augmented by a six-driver subwoofer system, and I only claim to come close.
HDCD'S
HDCD is a very clever way of getting 20 bit program resolution out of a 16 bit recording media (CD). Before true, 24 bit, high resolution media became practical HDCD made sense. Today it is the world's best audio buggy whip. The basic concepts of H...
Un-WARP your records
I have a few warped recoreds, but I nebver had much luck flattening them using various methods. Then, I got a Sony PS-X800 TT with "Biotracer" (servo controlled) linear tracking arm and, low and behold, even the warped records played fine. The mes...
battling the pops and clicks
Surface noise if a fact of life with vinyl, although you can minimize it by various expensive and labor-intensive methods. At some point you must learn to "listen through" the surface noise. Some people have no problem doing this, while others can...
A Good Classical SACD / DVD-A
The very best multichannel DVDA are the Tacet discs. Try the Mozart flute concertos for a start.
What's a Triode configuration?
Of course as Jeffreybehr points out all low level signal amplification is done with triodes, often the ubiqutous 12AX7, and its clones. The alternative to a triode is the pentode, which is used in power amps that have transformers. The extra grid ...
Can you have too many tubes?
"Too many" can apply to transistors as well as tubes. I think the issue is the number of gain stages in the signal path, and this is quite different from the eternal argument about tubes vs transistors. With either technology I think that most agr...
First Order Crossovers: Pros and Cons
Biomimetic...The polarity of the driver wiring is determined by how the speaker system is connected internally. If it has biwire terminals you could mess with this by reversing the cable at one terminal.
Checking cable impedance
You can only measure dc resistance with a multimeter. It will be near infinity from conductor to shield, and near zero from one end to the other. This is of no significance.
Does sound travel better at night?
The wine helps.
