Why Linear Tracking never took off?
Tbg...Sometime (when no one can see you), get a hold of a Sony PS X800 turntable with servo controlled linear tracking arm. The "main problems" with linear tracking arms that you cite are very accurate. The Sony arm approach is completely differen...
Outboard crossover box location??
My KLH12 speakers came with a sophisticated "outboard" crossover that looked like a preamp, with a nice wooden case, with knobs to shape the sound spectrum by attenuating the various drivers. Two sets of cables were provided. One set was about 3 f...

Gregm...Sphere? I don't understand. You do realize that the sound comes off what most people would think is the back of the cone. My C structure really gets rid of all the basket legs except one, and that one would need to be strong.
XLR, RCA or BNC?
Rannagarden...NO! We do NOT agree that XLR connectors reduce noise. BALANCED INTERFACES are more noise resistant than unbalanced, so IF you have a problem with noise pickup (and this should only occur with runs of 50 ft or more such as are common ...

XLR, RCA or BNC?
Of course only the XLR can be used for balanced lines, and balanced XLR should not be compared with unbalanced RCA. By the way, there is no reason why XLR could not be used single ended. There are also "phone plugs" of various sizes that can be ei...
Amp/xover for Hartley 24 subwoofer
The Audio Control "Richter scale" is what you want. 24 dB slope for both the subwoofer and Maggies will keep them inphase with each other at X/O. Also, the steeper slope will do a better job of keeping the Maggie diaphrams from flopping around try...
ultra low capacitance cables
Brainwater...Enough already! We all try to help in our own ways. My specialty, in case you haven't noticed, is to jump in when scientific principles are inappropriately cited to support some audiophile myth, that would be better justified as an ar...
ultra low capacitance cables
Suggestions:1. DIY as Sean suggests (unless you just want to get rid of some money). You can buy wire and connectors just as good as what the high priced labels use.2. Keep them short (again as Sean suggests). With your tube gear I do think that th...
ultra low capacitance cables
Brainwater...'less than 850 ohms' is quite high even for a tube preamp, although I have seen 2000 ohms quoted. High output impedance makes you sensitive to cable capacitance (HF roll off) and noise pickup. When I was into tubes, 600 ohms was the c...
Hearing affecting soundstage
Although my HF sensitivity is degraded (flying airplanes was my downfall) I don't have any problem with soundstage. Maybe that's because my old ears are equally bad.

Sean...Although I am a long time admirer of the FR Walsh driver I am not familiar with details of how it is assembled. However, as an engineer, I offer the following suggestions.1. Big picture...The existing design appears to be difficult to build...
Do subwoofer magnets interfere with amplifiers?
In general a dc magnetic field won't affect electronics, a TV CRT being the exception. The CRT involves a beam of electrons that are intended to be easily deflected so as to scan the screen. An AC field can cause Hum, but the power transformer of ...
XLR, RCA or BNC?
From the electric point of view there should be no difference, assuming all have clean contacts. BNC and XLR lock in place, so they won't get pulled out by mistake if you move stuff around. XLR are big and clunky, which makes them easy to handle.
Triode vs. Pentode
Trelja...Because music is "dynamic, unpredictable, ever changing" it makes a lousy tool for testing. Results with simple signals like a 1KHz sine wave, or a square wave, or whatever, are repeatable and therefore useful to reveal the effect of vari...
